US Navy officers lose jobs after fatal collision

The two officers in charge of the destroyer USS John S. McCain have been relieved of duty after a deadly accident earlier this year, the US Navy said in a statement Tuesday.

The guided-missile destroyer collided with a merchant ship off Singapore on August 21, leaving 10 US sailors dead and five more injured. The accident left a large highly visible hole in the US ship.

The McCain's commanding officer, Cmdr. Alfredo J. Sanchez, and executive officer, Cmdr. Jessie L. Sanchez, were "relieved due to a loss of confidence," according to statement from the US 7th Fleet in Yokosuka, Japan, the ship's home port.

"While the investigation is ongoing, it is evident the collision was preventable, the commanding officer exercised poor judgment, and the executive officer exercised poor leadership of the ship's training program," the statement said.

Both officers were assigned to other duties in Japan.

The McCain accident was the fourth involving a US warship in the Pacific this year.

In June, the guided-missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald collided with a cargo ship off Japan, killing seven US sailors.

Is that common to have a Captain and XO of the same rank?

I don’t know if it is common, but my CO and EO were both Lt Commanders. I can imagine why it would be a positive move for both, because you spend several years at the rank.

I think it is. I was always used to a Captain and Commander, or Commander and Lt.Commander, but in ships now (subs, etc) it seems common to have two of the same rank

I just posted this on another thread, hope you don't think I am spamming yours...

A scalpel in the hand of a butcher will give you a finely cut steak, but it is a dead piece of meat.

A 30 million dollar state of the art sensor system on a billion dollar ship in the hands of a well trained, well drilled, highly motivated and well led crew can spot incoming ballistic or cruise missiles, target them, and shoot them down.

A 30 million dollar state of the art sensor system on a billion dollar ship in the hands of a poorly trained, poorly motivated person being led by people more interested in gundecking qualification reports on that sensor system, and more interested in getting the sexual harassment polices in order and signed off on, is going to be hit by a big, lumbering ship, not to mention rocks, shoals, cruise missiles or thrown grenades.

Depends on the size of the ship. Not every ship rates an O-6 for a CO.

“Is that common to have a Captain and XO of the same rank?”
No.

Also, although the article doesn’t say, it is somewhat unusual to have the skipper and the xo with the same last name. I REALLY hope that it is not an Orwellian PC US Navy concession (Mr. and Mrs. Captain).

Hi.

“Cmdr. Alfredo J. Sanchez, and executive officer, Cmdr. Jessie L. Sanchez, “

Huh? Okay, a possibility. Just like James Kirk commands the Enterprise uh er, Zumwalt.

Do they or do they not have their 20 years in? Lloyd Bucher(USS Pueblo) was given a desk job until his 20 were up. Higher-ups were complicit/incompetent. General Stinglaub had his 30 years before taking Carter to school. Under Clinton/Obama the Generals were not allowed to gracefully retire. Had to stomp them on the way out. They knew the military had no use for them.

I see that Alfredo got his Masters (M.A.) degree in National Security Studies in 2010. In 2012 he became a "politico-military planner" which seems to be some sort of State Department run "thing". He jumped from that to being a commander of a destroyer in September 2016.

I say lets interrogate him and learn about this state department department called the "Bureau of Political-Military Affairs".

My drill instructor from Kansas, Sgt. Sanchez is probably very disappointed. One of the few men I knew 47 years ago that could run faster than I could (which wasn’t very fast) but he could do it backwards while yelling at me.
