Thanks Tom for many years of great music, not only growing up through the MTV Generation of the early 80s, but for being a gentleman and a true musician.
I cant forgive you for The Postman, however, I will always treasure every moment that my friends and family shared with you while your Hearbreakers were playing in the background.
My dad taking me to a 6th Grade hoops game listening to Refugee drive up the charts in the back of his Delta 88? Amen.
Singing along with you and the beautiful Stevie Nicks in high school? Love ya man and the band!
I watched and listened to the video of Refugee again and I will say that the Hammond Organ makes this song when it kicks in. Then, it weaves itself through some great percussion and the your soothing, but coarse voice that will never be replicated.
Our children will not know what it is like to live then or look up to a great musician like yourself sir. In my dreams I wish for my kids we will have another Tom Petty come along, however, that age of innocence and just imagining the lyrics you being put into context during my life growing up is so wonderful I had to vent here.
We lost an American Icon, what a beautiful man and great musician.
Icon.
Amen.
This time it was a missed extra point.
Last week, it was an unnecessary roughing the passer penalty, followed by a fortunate holding call.

We just aren’t a very good team, and we have a coach who is in completely over his head.
I dread what UGA is going to do to us.
Another great band! The Cars The Cars was right there with The Clash London Calling and the limes of the pretenders (too name a few) putting disco to death (Donna Summer was still cool).
In the Midwest late 70s early 80s; Styx, Kansas etc.
Also, thank God for Southern Rock. Looking back now, you could align lynyrd skynyrd, the Cars, REO and The Tubes on a Juke Box, of course Petty, and you could jam to Asteroids, Pac Man and Missle Command all day!
You 50 year olds hear me right! Yeah bitchez!
I do remember it could be a kiss of death to be labeled out of the mainstream for the radio. Then later "punk" was just for the hardcore groups like Sex Pistols/Dead Boys/Plasmatics and even the Clash (though later came to be accepted by the mainstream). New Wave was a label for other bands that shook up the rock scene of conventional bands like Styx/Kansas/Cheap Trick etc.
I liked them all, both New Wave and Punk.
If you look at the Rolling Stone "Top 100 Albums of the Last 20 Years" in 1988, the number 2 album was -- can you guess? -- "Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols".
That's because they really did shake up Rock 'n Roll, giving rock music a renaissance.
I know what you're thinking -- 1988 was the 20th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper.
UGA looks strong this year, but for some odd reason UGA struggles with Florida. It’s should be a good game.
Yes, those were the days!
And speaking of the Clash, I think “London Calling” is no. 8 in the RS top 500 albums list.
Florida’s offense is a substitute for sleeping pills.
Sex Pistols, Clash... pistols 76. Clash 78-79 London Calling, all of us hated Combat Rock. Petty outlasted all of them and still same age range to a delta of plus minus 5 years.
Great bands late 70s early 80s; Petty, U2, amazing to think about Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel and Genesis, Styx, Prince and Madonna.
Petty outlived everybody above excluding U2 imho.
Stalwart.
“the Cars”
Well, they were on the New Wave side of things, it’s just that everything else caught up. What really threw the record buying public for a loop was the single Cars, by Gary Numan. Pleasure Principle was a great record but it wasn’t The Cars which were really taking off right about the time Numan’s record came out.
I had an "older cool cousin" like that; he wound up being a Navy musician. But Petty was the "coolest" of all, IMO. Well said!
I’ve read that Tom Petty was playing himself in that movie. Kind of a funny thought.
I didnt say he wasnt talented. But his death just didnt effect me the way TP did...
“I watched and listened to the video of Refugee again and I will say that the Hammond Organ makes this song when it kicks in.”
That would be Benmont Tench, IMHO the best all around rock keyboard player ever. Most keyboard players are better at either piano or organ, Benmont is a master of both. Check out his grand piano solo on “Melinda below. He also has his own band, and does a lot of studio work as well.

When the Dylan Root Killings happened, Petty was pressured to disavow the Confederate flag.
He was warned that not disavowing the flag could harm his revenue stream.
He rolled over almost immediately, and spit on our flag. Skynyrd did the same.
Thus, he is dead to me. I cancelled my Tom Petty Pandora channel.
The University of Florida just announced that instead of playing “I Won’t Back Down” they are going to switch to “Free Fallin’”
