I eat most everythinbg from my garden raw and have for many, many years. I cook the squash, corn and green beans but the sugar snap peas, lettuce and maters I eat raw.
And you didn't get e-coli because you didn't have illegals pooping in your garden and handling your produce.
The warning applies to commercially grown produce. The things you grow yourself are almost certainly safe without cooking, unless of course you have the habit of pooping in your own garden or using raw manure for fertilizer.
Many traditional salad dressings are to an extent anti-microbial. Vinegar is, garlic is, salt, pepper and oregano are. Lemon juice is. Make up a nice dressing with the aforementioned, and always wash raw vegetables very thoroughly before making a salad or putting lettuce and tomato or anything raw on a sandwich. Imported produce is often fertilized with human waste, particularly from Mexico.
