Apple rolled out iOS 11 on Sept. 19, giving everyone with devices as old as 2013's iPhone 5S some fancy new features and ramped-up processing speeds.

There is zero difference in this graph/numbers from any electronics/computer platform when a new OS is introduced - Every new OS has additions, features that are more demanding of the hardware. Is this some kind of conspiracy theory? I cannot speak on behalf of any company, but the reality is - the answer is no. If Apple wanted to push/force upgrades, they would simply cut off support for older devices sooner - say two years or less. As it stands, Apple has been better than the industry at supporting devices.

And as an aside - my daughter’s iPhone 6 was just updated to iOS 11 last week - and while she’s expressed a bit of frustration regarding changes, between her actual use and my own time on her phone - there is no slowdown - and in fact, several parts of the OS actually seem to work better/faster. Indeed, I don’t see an upgrade to her hardware for sometime (and will probably be a hand-me-down from her mom of an iPhone 6+ - which also is running iOS 11 with no negative performance hits any of us have perceived).

One general solution to perceived slowdowns some seem to experience when updating operating systems (computer or phone) - is a fresh/clean install. Any OS, when updated over updates... builds up with patches and over-writes that can set up small errors that accumulate to bigger ones. Most OS developers have improved the process over the years, but it still isn’t always perfect. While this is generally less of a problem with SS Storage than with HDD storage, it still can be a factor. This is why the advice often given with an iPhone that seems to be dragging or acting funny after an update sometimes gets to resetting and setting it up as new with a fresh install of the OS (and has long been a troubleshooting step with Windows).

But - more often than not - slowdowns on an iOS device can be rectified by the hard reboot suggested earlier in this thread (probably fixes 90% + of the perceived issue). Which brings us to a very tiny number of updates that may have actual issues -

Yes, to be in that tiny number (statistically) with an issue - that stinks. But there is a path to fixing it in nearly every case (especially if you actually back up your device like the majority of folks do NOT do... much to their own downfall and frustration).
