“And where do you think culture comes from? Culture is about values, specifically rules for living that work over the long run, as opposed to satisfying short term needs. Who do you think is more likely to appreciate that, a smart person or a dumb one?”

Disagree that culture and values come from IQ. If a man is raised in a family that values honesty, education and hard work, he is more likely to behave in that manner whether or not his IQ is below average. If a man with a high IQ is raised by a family of white trash he is likely to behave as he was raised. Some of the biggest A-holes I know have Ph.Ds.

Of course there are exceptions to every rule. Don’t let the trees keep you from seeing the forest.

And yes if someone is inculcated in good values from birth, chances are they’ll stick with him if society keeps him on the straight and narrow.

However you have to consider how those values came about in the first place. Values are mainly about delayed gratification. And it is much more likely one will appreciate that - to make sacrifices, to be honest, work hard - if he’s intelligent than if he is not. Look at the places with the most successful cultures and you will also find them to be the places with the higher AVERAGE IQs.

And look at the black population in the US. They were raised amidst a successful culture and the majority of them have rejected it and essentially reverted to their african culture. Also look at sub-saharan Africa - are there any successful cultures there?

In fact one can look back 60, 70 years and the blacks as a group were more assimilated to the white culture back then than they are today, so it’s not a case that they never had it, it’s simply that they were in a way coerced to abide by it. But then, with the arrival of the civil right movement that gave them more freedom to be themselves, they’ve reverted back to their black culture.

Of course there are exceptions - found mostly with the more intelligent blacks - what I’m talking about is the majority.

Which parts of this do you disagree?
