There is a giant paint can beyond the left-center-field wall at Angel Stadium that reads, "Angels home run in the can $1,000,000." On Tuesday, Angels outfielder Justin Upton did just that. He hit a towering solo homer into the can, but Sherwin Williams won't be paying $1 million. According to ESPN, Sherwin Williams will not be donating the $1 million to the Angels Baseball Foundation because Upton's 444-foot homer did not land in the can on the fly. It bounced, and apparently this technicality is a thing. The team confirmed as much to ESPN. Sherwin Williams can do what it wants with its money, and $1 million is a ton of money. But the sign did say, "Angels home run in the can." Upton hit a home run in the can. It didn't say, "Angels home run in the can on the fly."

I think it is very bad publicity for companies to welsh on paying on such things.
Oh, Sherwin Williams will wind up donating.....and somebody there is going to be fired.
Very bad PR for Sherwin-Williams.
It was a home run, and it is in the can. Done.
It bounced in, seems fair to say it has to go straight in.
Ahh, but if it actually went straight into the can, it would likely bounce out again. This way the paint company would never have to pay.
Actually it seems totally UN-lame. Home runs land in their destination on the fly.
It wasn’t a home run in to the can, but a home run that then bounced in the can.
Seems somewhat analogous to a Ground rule double.
They should donate half a million.
A leaner?
Wouldn’t a direct hit bounce out?
I think it is very bad publicity for companies to welsh on paying on such things.
...
Yep. It would be worth more than a million to pay it out anyway.
Paul O’Neill needs to hit two home runs.
And catch a fly ball in his cap.
Sometimes it pays to cl8ck on the article before posting ...
hmmmm. not a technicality. it was pretty clearly meant to land in the can on the fly.
And I think it's quite ignorant to think that any bounce into the can would require a fulfillment of the Sponsor's agreement.
Too bad the Angels didn’t hit more home runs in the can, they might have made the playoffs.
It’s like those basketball hoops at the county fairs. All those disappointed girls not getting their stuffed bears as the men try to make an impossible shot - $2 for three throws!
Your FR name is Williams, and you’re for not paying the money out...
