Photography question

So I'm looking at getting another lens for my Nikon D60. I don't have anything other than a working knowledge of the camera with zero formal photography classes. I have the original lens that came with the camera and a 70-300 zoom.

What I shoot a lot of is elementary and middle school football games and sideline cheerleading. I was thinking a wide angle lens would be a great addition but don't know where to begin. I was looking at this lens AF-S DX NIKKOR 10-24mm F3.5-4.5G ED but didn't want to spend the 900.00 for a lens that might not suit what I'm shooting. Especially since there would be a 15% restocking fee if I return that lens. Any help from the photagraphy gurus is appreciated.

No problem. The real problem I have is the super inflated prices that Nikon has for their equipment. I am lucky I went Canon. This is a great time to buy accessories for their digital cameras. People are selling off their bulky digital camera equipment and going the smart phone route. I don’t think those smart phone users got as great eclipse photos as I did with my $85 70 to 300mm Canon zoom lens. Even the sunrise at Madras, Oregon was a stunning prelude.

Look at the Sony "A" Frames.
Then look on E-Bay at the Minolta older Maximum Lenses.
Try to find a 1980s Model MINOLTA Maxxam AF 7000 or 9000 Camera in working condition with a 28-85 mm AF lens MADE BY MINOLTA.
Minolta's Lenses are STILL some of the ABSOLUTE BEST on the market and the 80s models are DIRT CHEAP.
But make sure they are listed as WORKING Condition !

Thanks everyone for the invaluable input. I’ve decided upon renting the lense in question at Aperturent.com to try it out first. There was a location not too far from me in the burbs of Atlanta. I’ll let you know if this will be a permanent addition to my lens family.
