"... oxygen in the atmosphere suddenly increased by about 10,000 times in just 200 million years. Anything that takes 200 million years is not "suddenly"

I’ve seen pictures, it’s neat. There are other olivine beaches in the Pacific, not surprising I guess, all volcanic islands of fairly recent origin. :^)

So now the question becomes, what caused olivine to disappear? That was my first thought after reading the part about olivine.

I have about a quarter baggie of that beach olivine. Meteorites can have olivine and have a few of those too, and bags of Peridot. Yet none of it has disappeared.

These were not Goths:
- Vandals were an East Germanic tribes and Alans were the Alani - descendants of Sarmatians - they were Irani speakers and ancestors of today's Ossetians
- Suevians - not Goths
- Visigoths - well yeah, Goths :)
- Alans - again, an Irani tribe
- Burgundians - related to VAndals, not Goths
- Franks -- a west German tribe, not Goths
- Britons - Celts, not even Germanic, forget about Goths -- or do you mean Angles and Saxons? Even those were not Goths
- Huns - a Turkic or Finno-Magyar tribe, not even Indo-European, leave alone Germanic.
- Lombards - another German tribe, not Goths
- RAvenna -- that's a city in north-east Italy, not a tribe....

“Once on a star in a remote corner of the universe, some clever animals invented knowledge, but then the star grew cold, and the clever animals had to die. One might invent such a fable, and still not sufficiently have illustrated, how X and Y, how aimless and arbitrary, the human intellect appears in nature. There have been eternities when it did not exist, and when it is gone, nothing will have happened.”
- The F-Meister
As you can see, my own memory is already eroding. Sad.

According to the article it disappeared. It does not say that it diminished in quantity. I’ll take your word for it though.

The photo of the olivine beach shows it is yet a component of lava. Just not a significant part of the crust anymore.

I have attempted to reach it on a number of occaisions, but I was always WITH someone who chickened out at the thought of the 5 mile HIKE to get down there and back. Oh Well. Those days are over!

Doesn’t sound like that much fun to me, either — maybe a chopper (and I don’t care for those), or a zodiac boat?
