An acclaimed British conductor has been fired from a prestigious American music festival after a seemingly innocent joke he made to a black friend was labelled racist.
Matthew Halls was removed as artistic director of the Oregon Bach Festival following an incident in which he imitated a southern American accent while talking to his longstanding friend, the African-American classical singer Reginald Mobley.

UDGING by its 2017 program, the Oregon Bach Festival has made substantial cutbacks in programing in the post-Helmuth Rilling era. The German conductor, who co-founded the festival with the University of Oregon’s Royce Saltzman in 1971, retired in 2013. He was succeeded by the highly regarded conductor Matthew Halls.
The most pressing concerns are a decline in ticket sales, a reduction in the number of performances at the city’s major concert venue, and a substantial cut in the number of performances by professional musicians. It’s hard to know which of these developments are cause and which are effect. But either way, this year’s scaled-back schedule offers fewer choices for patrons and also raises questions about the festival’s future.

I have close friends from China. The stories they tell me about their childhood during Mao's Cultural Revolution are exactly this. The stories are unbelievable. A female friend told me when growing up in Beijing, a relative overseas bought her some leather shoes (when most people wore cloth shoes). She wore them to kindergarten. Her teacher organized a "struggle session" within the class to criticize her (a five year old) for having bourgeois attitudes.
We are going through a slow-moving version of the same thing.
Funny how a generation later, the Chinese went in the opposite direction.

I agree, and the hatred and resentment that fueled the Chinese cultural revolution is alive and well here at this point in our history. I have zero doubt that if given a green light (or even a yellow light) there are literally 100s of thousands or even millions in the US that would have no problem running through the neighborhoods of those more affluent than them, destroying property, looting/stealing, and even killing those they've been brought up to believe are permissible to hate.

They also destroyed all bonds of civil society and anything outside of government, and made politics preeminent among all things. Finally, they also made government extremely bureaucratic and corrupt. So they attitude is simply - take care of me and mine, and money is the only thing that can be counted on.
I man I know (white) has owned a business for 30 years with a man, who happens to be black. They are quite successful, and both started out together from nothing.
They have an act they sometimes do when traveling together on airplanes. The black guy is sitting in his seat, and the other guy comes along and says "Hey, I don't want to sit next to a black guy." The black guy then accuses him of being a Grand Wizard in the KKK. Then they all have a laugh after watching reaction of people around them.
They will admit they won't do it on airplanes now after 9/11.
