On this day in 1945, news broke around the world the Imperial Government of Japan would surrender ending a long a grueling world war. In Europe, the date was August 15 due to the time zone, but regardless the celebrations that broke out were no less zealous.

Fascinating story about those Betty bombers painted white with green crosses. One American wrote later how he climbed into one and the cabin floor was strewn with papers & documents.
If only he had gathered up as much as he could, they would have been historically priceless. His recollection fifty years later sounded like he kicked himself for not doing so.
The planes would have been Smithsonian relics, too, but one was burned and the other crashed while being ferried elsewhere.
Thanks for posting. My dad served in the 760th FA Btn in the Philippines. They were set to invade Japan if not for the surrender.
