I'm in Oklahoma and we have casinos everywhere. It seems.
But a tribe has surreptitiously acquired a small piece of property in my particular town and built facilities for a restaurant. Now it's been revealed they intend to start a casino, and our councilmen say there's nothing they can do.
Even though gambling is illegal in my town, these people are protected by the federal government to open up one of their filthy, prefabricated, typically "native American" dumps? They say they are, and they say as long as they comply with the feds, they can do whatever they want.
I'm going to contact my Congresscritters. Is there any precedent for shutting down a gambling establishment?
I never shot and Indian and am tired of giving these people special consideration for what my ancestors might, or might not have, done.
In the 19th century the United States government set aside lands in the western states for people of American Indian and European or European-American ancestry known as the Half-Breed Tract. The Nemaha Half-Breed Reservation was established by the Treaty of Prairie du Chien of 1830.[2] In Article 4 of the 1823 Treaty of Fond du Lac land was granted to the “half-breeds” of Chippewa descent on the islands and shore of St. Mary’s River near Sault Ste. Marie.[3]
During the Pemmican War trials that began in 1818 in Montreal regarding the destruction of the Selkirk Settlement on the Red River the terms Half-Breeds, Bois-Brulés, Brulés and Métifs were defined as “Persons descended from Indian women by white men, and in these trials applied chiefly to those employed by the North-West Company”.[4]
The Canadian government used the term half-breed in the late 19th and early 20th century for people who were of mixed Aboriginal and European ancestry.[5] The North-West Half-Breed Commission established by the Canadian government after the North West Rebellion also used the term to refer to the Métis residents of the North-West Territories. In 1885 children born in the Northwest of Métis parents or “pure Indian and white parents” were defined as half-breeds by the commission and were eligible for “Half-breed” Scrip
Foxwoods and Mohegan casinos are nice, but I like Foxwoods better. It does have a museum and a resource center. Mohegan has the Connecticut Sun and the New England Black Wolves playing in their arena along with Pro Rodeo.
I have several business trips to Vegas every year to attend tradeshows as an attendee, not as an exhibitor. Being from the East Coast, I love to get up at 5AM there, get a coffee and walk for two hours non-stop. I go in and out of casinos, walking through various mazes of connecting corridors and outside sidewalks. It is absolutely one of the most relaxing state of minds I achieve in life.
Then I go back to my room, do some work, go to the tradeshow until about 4, workout, eat dinner, gamble about 2 hours, go to bed about 9PM and repeat. Absolutely love it. One week in April/May and one week in September every year.
Many years ago seven families in Southern Oregon near Canyonville established that they were part of the Cow Creek tribe. They bought part of an intersection just off of I-5 in Canyonville. They eventually had the whole thing...casino, hotel, restaurant and shows. They contribute lots of money to the local communities and it is where we stay when we visit Glendale which has no accommodations. Most people would say the casino was a good move and is appreciated by the locals.
I'm only 1/16th Mohawk, not even enough to be considered of native blood, and agree with you.
If it’s off the reservation, they should have to abide with the city council.

Oh, and thanks for your service. My brother was a Vietnam vet...1966-67, Cu-Chi, U.S. Army, Company C, 4 Bn, 23rd Infantry, 25th Division (M). He died way too young at the age of 51. I turned 70 today, and am the last one left in my immediate family.
I’m glad he made it home...I was “brown water” Navy...Nha Be and Can Tho...’68-’69...

In Oneida County, NY, they hire everyone, not just members of their own tribe. They use the money they make from the casino for scholarships, educational programs, etc., and invest in the tribal community.
If they only hired tribal members, people would be bitching about that too.
Get the City Government to declare all streets adjacent to the property as ONE WAY STREETS, heading AWAY from it.
Unless one of them is a state or federal highway, there should be nothing they can do.

It was the white man who stripped the Indians of their heritage, culture, and language. Children were rounded up, taken away from their families, and sent for re-education to schools like the one that existed in Carlisle, Pa. They had to have their hair cut like the white man, no braids, and had to dress like the white man. They were forced to give up their Indian names, and white names were given to them. They could not speak their language, only English, and could not practice any religion other than what was taught at the school.
Thank the government for that. They created the black ghetto, and made it dependent on the Federal Government. They did the same thing to the Indians in this country.
