Easy Speed Math they Don't Teach You in School - Part 5 - Squaring
Much fun.
I don’t think the word “calculator” was even among our spelling words when I went to school. I would have welcomed the use of one but I’m sure it wouldn’t have been allowed...
My memory is getting foggy, but was it Pickett that built the yellow aluminum slides. I had two, one about 9” (pocket) and another about 14”x2.5” which I used until I went back to college in 78 to study chem-e. Bought a HP41c and never looked back. Seems I was always internally wired in reverse Polish. Dean’s list in math too. LOL.
Just great! I missed the other 4 parts and now will be ignorant in math.... too.
Math is no longer needed.
Cal State will no longer require placement exams and remedial classes for freshmen

It's cool to know that I am in the audience of pure genius and one who freely admits it.........
Ping.
I feel your pain. I was quite good at math, high scores on standardized tests, etc., but in my doddering old age I have trouble figuring out making change. Oh well....
I have a friend who is president of Mensa for a large area.
He has asked me several times to take the test but frankly I don’t think I would pass it now.
In my younger days, yes.

They need to teach compound interest in high school.
Q. The square root of 36 is?
How do you FEEL about 7?
A. 7. Correct!
The first hand held calculator I personally seen was at a store in (Brentwood) Long Island, New York, for the cheap price of IIRC, $129.00. About the size of a common Bank, check-book. If I recall correctly, without looking circa 1968-9.
My Second run in with a "hand held calculator," was in math class, Brentwood, {East} junior high (8th grade,) Algebra. It turned out, a guy who I thought was like me, (Let's just say math avoidance at any and all cost,) was a walking , talking SUPER COMPUTER IN MATH. How did I learn this, well we were talking in class, the teacher (Mr Gekko, spelling?) called on my friend Tommy Baldwin, hoping to make a point, (a.k.a. an a$$ of) that we needed to pay attention. Tommy took over the class, showing 6 or 10 different ways to solve the problem, he had on the chalk / black board. After that the teacher, trying to show off his NEW HAND HELD CALCULATOR, and trying to save face, challenged Tommy to a contest, calling out loud, different math problems, and before he could enter the problem, into the his NEW HAND HELD CALCULATOR, Tommy would shout out the answer. Talk about a a$$ kicking, by an 8th grader, Tommy. The teacher never bothered Tommy again.
I knew Tommy at this time maybe 6 month's plus, and never did I get a hint, that he was a walking math genius. After that day, again never a word from Tommy on the subject of math. Go figure.
BOOKbump
I googled it: square root of 36 is
It looks to be 6
The calculator they have has weird words like cos, sin, log, Ans etc.
In short I cannot operate the calculator.
Oh my gosh even *I* understand this! This is wonderful. I’ll be checking out all this guy’s videos!
I have watched all his videos (there aren't very many). They are easy to understand and full of good information.
Thank you for posting, Rooster!
Wow - thanks Rooster.
That was interesting.
Glad you liked it.:-)
This can be done graphically or with algebra.
A is the number you want to square
d is the difference between the number and 100
2’s are super script meaning square, i don’t know how to format it that way
A=100-d
A2=(100-d)2
= 10000 -200d+d2
Given 100(A=100-d)
100A=10000-100d
Substitute for 10000 and simplify
= 100A-100d+d2
A2= 100(A-d)+d2
I don’t know how to add an image so I can’t show it graphically.
The problem with the fast method is that he did not explain why it works and leaves the person a cripple. What is 98 squared? By his method it is 964 which is wrong, it is 9604. What is 783 squared. It can be done if you understand what is going on with the method. By it more like grammer class. many many rules with exceptions for each rule. Learn how to do math right and understand why the short cuts work.
If someone can tell mehow to post a graphic i will show it because it is very understandable that way.
