The minute you walked in the joint, I could tell you were a man of distinction a real big tipper.
Granted, todays crop of servers at the citys restaurants are probably not humming anything close to this old standard, but experienced waiters and waitresses say that they usually know how much they are probably going to get tipped as soon as a customer walks in.
Generally, men tip better than women, says Meleck Verbay, who tends tables at Le Midi, an East 13th Street French restaurant where dinners range up to $50. She says that she hates to generalize, but adds that the gender tipping gap can get pretty wide, with men usually tipping about 20 percent (and occasionally as much as 40 percent) while women can go as low as 15 percent, or even 10 percent.

Good luck!!
I got a Philly Cheese Steak (yes with provolone) light onion and green peppers. It was $9.99 with a small potato salad and chips. That was my only Saturday meal. A bit of grease, but that’s what makes it good.
Dang, now I’m hungry again........
Here’s a tip: Get a better job.
Ask any server - there is also a significant correlation to race.

“Generally, men tip better than women, says Meleck Verbay, who tends tables at Le Midi, an East 13th Street French restaurant...”
I washed dishes in high school and waited tables in college. I tip a minimum of twenty percent because I know what hard ass work restaurant work is. If I get lousy service I still tip twenty percent. That’s because I know the waiter is either getting screwed over by the kitchen, is having an understandably bad day, or is genuinely incompetent and will be fired soon. In all cases, they have my pity.
Convincing people who are overweight due to inactivity that dietary fat is bad and charging more for low calorie, low fat food is one of the better scams of the past century.
I dont eat steak more than once or twice a month, but more because my cardiologist told me to cut back on red meat.
If the service is good and it’s dinner time I tip 25 to 30 percent
I typically tip 20 percent.
Why are women such stingy tippers?
White male republicans are the best tippers - I assume “republicans” is a catch all name for successful white privilege types? /s
30-50% if she’s smiling, doesnt come across as a leftist and doesn’t bring the entree before I’ve finished my salad (pet peeve) - If she leaves her number in the check folder thing, she’s probably getting a Benjamin
Women are bad tippers because generally wait staff is young and attractive. Women don’t much care for other women, especially younger and cuter ones
I watched my waitress in one cheap pizza restaurant cleaning tables other servers had wiped down. Instead of knocking the crumbs onto the floor in ten seconds, she took a couple minutes whenever she had time and left another table so clean you could eat off of it. I was impressed, and I tipped her 40% because of that and the overall excellent service.
Costco’s steaks are amazing. Neither of us knows how to grill, or cares to know, so I do it on a Cuisinart electric grill. It’s delicious.
As for tipping, having been a waitress during my college years I think I tip pretty well. Base is 17%, then higher for great service.
Canadians?
I learned a dirty little secret from a meat distributor when I worked at a high end steak house in college. The secret is only about 10% of beef is grade A prime with “abundant” marbling, and all of it goes to commercial sales and restaurants. The public does not have access to that meat. That is why no one can never seem to get that restaurant taste at home....
She learned a lot of very valuable life lessons working as a server.....most important was how to quickly assess and read people by dress, demeanor, and yes, race.....
Generally tipping varies by gender and race......
The best stories were from Valentines Day, she always worked the night before, which in the industry is called Mistress night. Guy's would bring their girlfriend in the night before Valentines Day and then had the temerity to bring their wife back to the same restaurant on Valentines Day.
My daughter always had the Hostess seat the returning ones at her tables....She said the look on the guys face when he recognized her (knowing his secret) was priceless....The silent look, “I will give you a huge tip if you remain quiet” had to be hysterical....Typically, $100 on a $100 meal or greater.....
She cleaned up on Valentines Day......

My @$$
When I worked at GE in the early 1980’s, we had Diner’s Club corporate cards for travel expenses. We were told to tip exactly 16.000% every time, regardless of the quality of service, since the card said “General Electric” on it.
We kept track of the service quality by whether we rounded the penny column up or down.
Yeah, a certain group with chips on their shoulders are notoriously bad tippers. Their race is poor, so they can skip tipping.
