New Jersey Governor Chris Christie was photographed lounging at a deserted state-owned beach on Sunday a beach that has been closed to all other New Jerseyans amid a government shutdown that Christie ordered Friday.
The photos, which were posted to NJ Advance Medias NJ.com, showed Christie and his family hanging out at the Island Beach State Park on Sunday afternoon before Christie appeared in Trenton for a press conference on the shutdown.
Christie on Friday ordered the shutdown of nonessential services including state parks amid a stalemate over whether to include legislation affecting the states largest health insurer in the budget.

He lives there. It was in front of or on his property.
I am not even slightly a fan of Chris Christie.
That said, this is not even slightly his fault. Showing up on the beach may even be a Trumpian jujitsu maneuver - the press obsessing over it only highlights and keeps in the spotlight the Democrats’ failure to pass a budget.
Christie didn’t want to close anything; he was very clear that he has no money to spend, and is waiting for Dems to submit a budget.
In high-tax, everyone-wants-free-sh!t states like NJ, this is a great way to force people to address our spending. They always thought “someone else” pays for it, and we’ve lost a lot of those “someone elses”...
Haiku ambulance:
I guess the staple popped.
Beached whale....creaky chair.
Kind of Bega the question. Why does a beach have to be “open” in order to visit it?
Christie can forgedda-bout any future high office...this pic/story will come back to haunt him....as well as the whole vindictive bridge closure thang.
No life guards. Signs posted. Doesn't mean you can't go. Public Beaches are X amount of yards/miles's wide. After that is private or unregulated beaches. Swim at your own risk.
Only because he is governor. The state maintains a residence there for the governor, much like Camp David for the president.
He has not been given a budget to sign - he did NOT shut down the government, the legislature did.
Bet we'd never see that picture had Corzine still been governor and did the same thing.
Sweet, close the parks on the Independence Day weekend. That’s going to win him some friends. Then get caught using one of the closed beaches. Masterful move. Whale on the beach!!! /s
Well done!!!
******He lives there. It was in front of or on his property.****
NOT TRUE!!!!
Also closed was Island Beach State Park, where the state owns a residence that the governor can use.
Christie shut it down because he was afraid that someone would try to push him back into the water
My wife and I had it with this jerk long ago. It’s a sanctuary state where the rights of normal, law abiding Americans are stomped on and discarded. I really love my job and all of my family is here but I am going to have to explore moving to Pennsy and adding an extra hour to my commute.
It may be a small price to pay considering everything I’ve already had to give up.
Worst part is that nobody I know will vote for his lackey Kim Guadagno to replace him so the state will go even further left very soon, imho.
I know she has the (R) next to her name but when she came out as a never-Trumper it made it impossible to support her.
If you don’t support and fight for this President then you’re no friend of mine.
See the link...it is CLOSED.
You’re response doesn’t answer my contention. Making the decision to close state parks, especially over the holiday weekend, was not a choice that should’ve been made. It doesn’t punish the people who didn’t get the budget written and passed. And then, to use the beach? It’s abuse of power.
Christie has made it clear he didn’t “close” anything; he can’t operate facilities without money approved to pay for them. This is an issue between two Dems (the leaders of the state senate and assembly) who can’t agree.
You are simply repeating the liberal NJ media mantra; listen to Christie’s explanation. As far as his use of the beach, it is not associated with the closed beach but instead with a governor’s beach house (provided to all governors).
We voted for Christie to do exactly this type of thing, and I suspect most of his supporters are OK with this. There are still plenty of beaches open in NJ, just not those operated by state workers.
We are tired of paying people we can’t afford; the Dems have to submit a budget to him, and until then there is no money for these things.
Again, it’s about the optics. Christie has access to a beach not affected by the closure. Little folk don’t. It makes people wonder how sincere he is about solving the problem. That’s the kind of thing elitists do and think it’s okay.
Again, listen to his explanation, and the DEMOCRAT senate leader; this is about a Dem assembly leader refusing to submit a budget. Optics be damned; Christie can’t submit his own budget. The legislature, completely controlled by Democrats, must do so.
