There was the "Wild Man" or "Blue Man" of the Ozarks who was seen from the mid-19th to the very early 20th century.

There didn't need to be anything supernatural behind it, plenty of pioneers, mountain men, Indians, renegades, Civil War deserters, hobos, trappers, runaway slaves, bandits wandering around in the woods.
