Eric Clapton Just Caught the Year's Biggest Salmon in Iceland

Rock & roll legend. World-class guitarist. Record-setting angler? Turns out that Eric Clapton, one of the greatest musicians of all time, is just as good with a fly rod as he is a guitar.

Clapton, while on a fly-fishing trip to Iceland last week, landed a 28-pound salmon on the Vatnsdalsá River, setting the record for reeling in the biggest salmon of the summer. The massive fish measured 42.5 inches. Working with Vatnsdalsá guide Sturla Birginsson, Clapton had to run over half a mile downriver after hooking the monster, and spent two and a half hours reeling it in. The local fishing association enforces a strict catch-and-release policy on the Vatnsdalsá River, but Clapton was able to snap a picture of his record-setting catch before setting it back into the river.

Oh for God’s sake, the guy caught a fish. Can you guys stop the judging BS for one second?

With that log in your eye it must be difficult to see the picture.

Actually, he was born Eric Clapp.

...and the fish’s name is Eric. He’s an halibut.

Yeah, it’s from last year. This article doesn’t have any date on the page. Easy mistake.

“Pretty much every guitar player in the world”

Oddly enough Clapton would not agree. He’s rather humble in that respect and understands that a lot of his Fame was due to being at the right place at the right time. And I respect him for that.

He’s a good Blues guitarist and he paved the way for other guitarists such as Bonamassa who is a gigantic talent in a time that probably will not allow him (Bonamassa) to overshadow Clapton. It’s sort of a chicken and the egg thing and which came first. Of course we all know Clapton came first over Bonamassa but Clapton didn’t really come first. The old bluesman from the Mississippi Delta whom Clapton emulated came first, and that’s another thing that Clapton humbly understands and gives due credit. I respect Clapton for that also.

Personally I prefer Ted Greene and other Jazz guitarist such as Gambale and Holdsworth over Clapton. But Clapton is very listenable and I do appreciate his catalog.

Was Layla and other assorted love songs ever remastered? I would like to hear a remastered version because the original was very muddy sounding to me and Duane Allman kicked some serious buttock during those sessions. The whole line up on Layla was spectacular.

Nice fish by the way... at that size and age it wouldn’t taste all that great. But Clapton has spent a lifetime catching and releasing various things... But the fight was probably worth every second of pleasure that was derived from it.

“one of the greatest musicians of all time” By whose measure? Clapton's only brush with greatness was in the late 1960's, when Leon Russell played piano on his first album.

Clapton was born on 30 March 1945 in Ripley, Surrey, England, to 16-year-old Patricia Molly Clapton (7 January 1929 – March 1999) and Edward Walter Fryer (21 March 1920 – 15 May 1985), a 25-year-old soldier from Montreal, Quebec.[11] Fryer shipped off to war prior to Clapton's birth and then returned to Canada. Clapton grew up believing that his grandmother, Rose, and her second husband, Jack Clapp, Patricia's stepfather, were his parents, and that his mother was actually his older sister. The similarity in surnames gave rise to the erroneous belief that Clapton's real surname is Clapp (Reginald Cecil Clapton was the name of Rose's first husband, Eric Clapton's. maternal grandfather).

Most people don’t know the late great Leon Russell anymore . He was an incredibly talented song writer and adequate piano player.

As far as Clapton. I’ve seen him with Cream, once and multiple times by himself. He is incredibly proficient. He does not entertain (no stage show) he is just good. He is no Andrés Segovia.....no Doc Watson. But for a rock/blues performer he is close to the best. Along with the rest of Yardbirds Triumvirate he is one of the best.
