An odd thing began happening to my wife a few weeks ago. She was trying to hook up to our home wi-fi system and there was an available network called "FBI camera". I blew it off and told her it was probably one she accidentally saved while at a starbucks or something and someone was just using a "creative name" for their hotspot. The reason I believed that is that our home is several hundred yards from the nearest neighbor, and most of them don't have computers.
Here is the weird part: I'm working from home today and when I tried to log on to my hotspot with my work computer, "FBI camera" was on the list of available networks with two bars of signal. It comes and goes.
I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but how could there be anything like that being picked up out here in the middle of nowhere? We are surrounded by about six acres of field and that is surrounded by about 100 foot thick forest all around.
Anybody have an idea?
A little off topic, but similar idea. In ON years ago, radar detectors were illegal but many residents bought them in Québec. The OPP would station cruisers on expressways and then blast their radars at full gain. They would observe brake lights going on, and pull over those vehicles. Some cops would offer you a choice: confiscation of the unit and a fine or disconnect it and smash it yourself.
My WiFi is named CIA Subnet 23. Might change it to FBI Camera.
Nothing to worry about Mr. D.
Here, it was either ‘RCMP surveillance van’, ‘CSIS’ or ‘AB Sheriff surveillance’. Someone is a joker.
P.S. Near some abortion clinics, the FBI has installed security cameras on utility poles or buildings to monitor and protests at the facilities. If you know what to look for they are pretty obvious, even thought they are disguised as transformers or communication boxes.
I had one in my neighborhood labeled as “fart”.
I think I’ll rename my WIFI “Big Brother”.
Can you change it to Hillary for prison 2017? Where do I send the donation?
It’s a nearby access point someone have named that to be funny. My barn is 3000 ft away thru the woods and I can pick it up at my house pretty often. Not connect and get an ip via DHCP, but see it and try to connect.
That said, to be safe and avoid prosecution from “reasonable prosecutors,” make sure to house classified data on an unsecured server as this is a lock-tight get out of jail free card.
Some WiFi units have incredible range. We have one in our neighborhood (2 blocks from my house) that is strong enough to interfere with my home WiFi network. I had to change to different channels to avoid collisions with this other system. I now use channels 3 & 9, because 1 & 6 are swamped. I also can’t use 11, because my neighbor next door brought home a commercial Wifi router from his business and it overpowers channel 11 in my house.
My router is named:
FBI surveillance van #14
#18 They also are tracking all people who post to this article : )
lol...i named my wifi funny stuff like that too.
Sweet, dry or perfect, it's a Scotch Manhattan.
I'm in Taiwan and I call mine Clinton Email Server.
What have you been up to?
Yea, someone in my area named theirs FBI Surveillance
This is really from Robroy/cuban leaf/Mr Douglas, I’m using my wife’s old account (which I’m sure will be banned shortly):
You can search for any history by user regarding the information below...
Back story:
I came to freerepublic in November of 1998, a little over a year after getting rid of television. My name was Robroy. I’ve always been respectful to users except when calling out lunacy, and then only after making several attempts to be reasonable. And even then, always cutting deeply and sharply with direct and accurate words, based on their dictionary meaning.
I had never run afoul of the mods here. Not even so much as a warning, until late 2011. I was on a thread about pedophiles and was using my phone for the first time to post. It meant my posts were a bit more cryptic than normal because, well, thoughtful posts are a lot of work on a cell phone keypad, especially if you’ve never done it before.
Anyway, on that thread I was only trying to point out that on this very site, a year or two before the case in the OP happened, a guy was found to have kiddie porn on his computer, but it turned out that it was not him, but some sort of virus, that had put it there and the charges were dropped. I was simply trying to make the case that having it on your PC MIGHT be less actionable than being caught fondling kids and we should be careful in our rush to judgement. You know, the ol’ “innocent until proven guilty” thing. But before I could even explain it, someone named JeanS started accusing me of supporting pedophelia and, after trying to use logic (again, in my “short” phone posts), I finally accused JeanS of being a woman because she seemed incapable of actually grasping the logic in my posts.
Within a few minutes, I was banned. No Warning. No nothing. Just done, after 13 years with a perfect record.
OK, I figured she was a friend of Jimrobs and maybe he was drunk that night or something. I mean, after all, he broke his own forum rules in that banning. I was willing to cut slack.
Interestingly, several posters, including Laz, posted after mine and explained what I was probably trying to get at, though I never got the chance. My wife (Robroys woman) even started a thread about it.
So I waited a few months before I created Cuban Leaf to continue to post. That went swimmingly until the Trump primary. I was getting concerned about the “brownshirt attitude” of some trump supporters. That is, all one had to do was suggest that a thing he did or said may be a bit troubling and, rather than discuss it, there were some strong downright “DU-like” “you sound like one of those dirty [fill in name of ethnic/political group you hate] to me, often with the Admin added to the “to”. That really gave me the creeps.
I was then temp banned for one of those posts. Then during the race between Trump and Hillary, the same thing happened. This time I really lost a lot of respect for a part of the freeper community. They really had become a right wing equivalent of what you see on DU.
But that’s ok, because in the end our guy won, and he’s doing a great job, if only in his ticking off the left and exposing their lunacy and hate.
But anyway, I’ve made no secret about who I am and have even included all my past names in posts. I’ve gotten a lot of private messages about it. I figured that pretty much everyone here knew, and that certainly JimRob knew.
So here we are today.
I started a thread this morning about seeing an odd WIFI router name here at home, where my neighbors are hundreds of yards away. “FBI camera”. I was getting a lot of helpful responses that let me know that in fact I could get reception from a neighbor’s router quite a ways away. I also mentioned to a guy that I had been here since 1998 and that I had been robroy, then cuban leaf and, finally, Mr. Douglas.
Then I did some work, checked my messages on the thread, tried to respond to one and it said my “posting privileges” had been revoked because, “retread”.
Well, that threw me off. :-)
It communicated several things, not least of which is that apparently the mods had never figured out who I was. That is rather telling in a few ways, considering how active I am, and have been for almost 20 years now, and how liberally I’ve made it clear who I am.
But I’ll not be creating a new account. Truth be told, the Internet has matured since 1998 and Freerepublic is not the only game in town any more. So I take this a little differently than I would have in the 20th century or even 2011.
I’ve met with a number of freepers both here and in Seattle. I went to a couple of freerepublic get togethers in the northwest. The Internet and the western world is going through some big changes. Honestly, my desire to talk about it has waned as I focus more on taking action (defensive, not offensive). Heck, it’s why I left my six figure income behind in Seattle and bought a farm and new house in central KY. It’s why I have the chickens. It’s why I live in a county that does not require building permits. And getting rid of Freerepublic for me, truth be told, is like an alcoholic being banned from alcohol.
i.e. it’s a good thing at the end of the day. If I REALLY want to discuss this stuff, I can now spar with people on Youtube and my Facebook friends - who I actually know in the real world. Well, that’s true of my “real” facebook page. The other one is just for fun and commenting on news sites that require something like facebook.
It’s been fun posting with most of you and I’ll probably see you here and there on other sites. Heck, I might even lurk a few times. At least at first. Keep it up folks, but beware the brown-shirts. There are a few of them still here.
I don’t expect to be able to do much posting on this thread, obviously, but to be frank, I need to finish the railing on the deck and replace the water heater that failed last night. Thank GOD for Pex pipe and sharkbite. :-)
BTW, below are the threads I mentioned at the beginning.

“Robroy is gone. Here is the contact info”:

BTW, It’s kind of a shame I lost this name because it is what some of my neighbors called me when I first moved here. It fits, though I don’t wear a suit when using my tractor. :)
