A few weeks ago we had a thread with a subject of who the greatest male vocalist ever were. There were many great comments on that thread. So for tonight, I am asking who do you think are the three greatest female vocalists ever?
This is a fun thread, not a slag off someone’s choice thread.
Tina Turner
Aretha Franklin
That is my list too. It all depends on what someone considers "best." I don't believe Stevie Nicks has a high quality voice, but more than any other singer I can think of, she makes the song interesting to listen to. She improves every song she sings.
On the other side, I'd rate one of the worst as Whitney Houston. She actually had a great voice, but didn't seem to know her limits. If she sang at an 8 or 9 level, she'd be one of the best. But she was often trying to take it to 11, and end up screetching rather than singing.
Joan Sutherland, Mado Robin, and Ella
Alison Krauss - Whisky Lullaby (with Brad Paisley) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZbN_nmxAGk
Christine McVie - Songbird - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7kmw31nRDU
Linda Ronstadt - Different Drum (with Stone Ponies) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhtnB6kSCyA
Here’s another vote for Bubbles, the great Beverly Sills.
In the world of Jazz, I’ll add the amazing Ella Fitzgerald.
“Kirk Te Kinewa”?
I didn’t know Kiri had a brother.
Mariska Veres
Anna Haslam
Shirley Bassey
Karen carpenter
Whitney Houston
Susannah Hoffs
Good to know.
Diva Plavalaguna.
Dolly Parton
Is Linda Ronstadt the one who sang with the Stone Ponies? If so, she was great.
Also Mama Cass with the Mamas and Papas.
I can’t recall her name right now but the fairly young county singer who recorded “Blue”.
Shocked no one has mentioned KD Lang
I’d add Allison Krause
Third would be a few toss ups
Billie Holliday Aretha and Bonnie Raitt
Its an entirely subjective question.
How do you weight range? Timbre? Empathic performance? Control? And do volume or musical genre matter?
The question is pretty vague.
Patsy Cline.
*** “ Ann Wilson “ ***
No kidding she used to be my neighbor, I did not know who she was, I was building a fence that butted up against her property while it was snowing and she brought out a bottle of Yukon Jack and a Carafe of Coffee with a couple of cups...we just sat on some stumps and talked, two weeks later I’m fixing a tire at the Service Station when a Mercedes pulls in and all the youngsters were fighting to wash the windshield ... she got out of the car and saw me at the Tire Machine ... “Hi Jeff” I waved said “Hi Ann”
Those kids were so amazed and I was still in the dark..
I thought she was somebodies Mom
Since then I do like Yukon Jack w Coffee, if I can find it
(just a nice lady)
Janis Joplin!
I don’t care what anybody says. Good Gravy!
Sissel
Alison Krause
Karen Carpenter
Several others, but these are my top three
Agree with Anita O’day. I’d add Rosemary Clooney. Possibly Gogi Grant. And, dare I say, Janice Joplin.
