The feature known as Horseshoe Basin in the western Gulf of Mexico shows up far more clearly on the new high-resolution map (right).

Could that have been made by Paul Bunyan’s ox?

That horseshoe is “pointed” at the Yucatan peninsula. Could a blob from that asteroid from 65 million years ago have affected that feature?

[The map] was created by a government agency you’ve likely never heard of called the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM)

**************

There are countless such agencies in the federal government. A virtual constellation of bureaucracies, many of whom work in areas that overlap and often duplicate the work of other agencies. These redundancies are very expensive and wasteful.

Its a cool map, but did we need another nondescript government agency to produce this?

Of course, much of the Gulf of Mexico was dry land before the global warming melted the great glacier.

Looks like point of impact of meteor many moons ago.
When I was a kid I used to wonder why geodes were found around Tampa Bay. Certainly Fla was never volcanic or igneous.
Years later it was established a meteor had hit Earth near what is the Yucatan Peninsular.
That map sure looks like the spot.

The Wapo has a whole slew of unnamed sources that say Trump has made a deal with the ChiComs to let them build artificial islands in the mapped area. They will donate 20% of the proceeds to his new foundation. /sarc

I was hoping that the article would talk about the little-known coral reefs south of Galveston in the middle of the Gulf - Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary.
