It should be illegal for any elected government official to have a private e-mail account while serving in office.

I understand the sentiment, but we can't strip American citizens of their basic liberties as a condition of government employment.

Not all government employees, only those directly elected by the public. To my mind, to seek such elective office should be prima facie consent to absolute transparency.
