To the editor: So Mayor Mitch Landrieu and the City Council of New Orleans feel that the statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee was a public nuisance? (New Orleans removes a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from its perch of 133 years, May 19)
Good thing Landrieu is not mayor of Washington, where the Vietnam Veterans Memorial represents a period of public divisiveness. It has been called the memorial that nobody wanted except the Vietnam vets.

True. The addition of the statue and the flag transformed it. As I remember, the artist who designed the memorial, Maya Lin, objected to the 3 soldiers statue
- but tough cookies, it's ours.
Of corse they don’t go to see the monuments as part of their classes.
But they might at least see pictures of the generals, which the fanatics want to remove also. And they—or their instructors—might want to go to the battlefields themselves.
We were remembering a guy we knew as "Wimpy" a real character whose signature trick was to be able to suck in his breath and his pants would fall.
We were laughing about the memories of his exploits and a middle-aged woman came up to us and sternly told us that it was disrespectful for us to laugh while at our memorial.
I said "Ma'am, those were friends of our ours - and we think they'd be happy to know that they still could get us to laugh".
She stormed away, still angry and we continued our run.
Points taken.
I do not make a judgment on a historical fact. You were wrong on that point. Grant manumitted the only slave he owned three years before the war began. At the start of the war, Lee was still responsible for about 150 slaves of his father in law’s estate, and would take another 18 months to free them.
Lee did not own the slaves. They were part of the GWP Custis estate for which he was the executor. The Custis will required the slaves to be given their freedom once the estate’s legacies and debts were paid off but no later than five years after his death.
and for having accepted the surrender of three Confederate Armies.
Here's an idea for all you R.E. Lee haters. Learn proper English. Horses are hung. Men are hanged.
you’re stupidity is showing child, let the adults talk.
Then I guess that makes him a despicable creature - at least in your eyes.
not in the least. He was charged with administering the Custis estate, he carried out the duties of that responsibility. nothing more nothing less.
The only idiot here is you you moron. You’re side started a war and lost. Pound salt Reb.
The Black plague leaders behind the removals should be lynched or at least stood against the wall and shot.
You need to be more polite in your discourse. Are you sure you belong here?
