I looked around on search a little, most places say around 5% bother to train their dog. Depressing but not unexpected. Dogs like to be trained and have limits, at least if it is done the way it should be. Of course puppies are different as you say.

Small dogs go more untrained than larger breeds/dogs. For obvious reasons, an untrained small dog is much less consequential. In fact I don’t think I have ever been around a small/toy dog that was trained, maybe in circus shows or something. Maybe it has something to do with brain size as well?

Wow.

That is *much* lower than I expected and really disappointing.

Small dogs tend to be babied and I suspect people worry about being ‘rough’ with them.
And indeed, some tiny breeds, like Teacup Chihuahuas are very fragile.

My aunt had one and she carried it everywhere.
And *every* chance it got, it would try to bite my mom when she walked past my aunt.

I had a relative who had a Doberman for years, who was like, the best dog on the planet. I think, when it comes to dogs, ya pays yer money, ya takes yer chances. His kids were very boisterous, and many dogs would be aggressive around anyone who is fighting, wrestling, or even yelling. I know a woman who got in an argument with her boyfriend, and when they got in each other’s faces, their pit bull went ape, and started attacking them. Thank God the kids weren’t home. With dogs, you just never know. Our mini dachshund will try to bite me, if I get close to my husband when the dog’s in his lap. And it’s not personal. If he’s in my lap, he’ll act the same way, towards my husband. He’s a bit of a psycho. Dachshunds can be so sweet, but we happened to get a dud. He wasn’t like that at first, but as he aged, he got cranky. And we’ve never been harsh with him, either. He’s extremely jealous. But, we don’t have kids at our house, and as I said, if they visit, the dog’s are shut up in another room. If we had kids, the dog would have been history a long time ago, but we got him, and we’re responsible for him, so here he sits.

I’ve always thought being around a trained dog was a pleasure for you and the dog. Likewise being around an untrained dog sucks for everyone. Dogs actually like to be trained and have structure and discipline, to know exactly who is in charge of things and what is expected of them.

Looking around the net, many claim the reason the vast majority of well cared for dogs go untrained is that the owners think it makes the dog feel bad, they mistakenly humanize the dogs feelings. I suspect while that is true, laziness is also a main component. Training a dog takes time, repetition and effort. Also in the mass media culture today everyone has a shortened attention span. Many probably are real gung ho to train their dog at first but get bored and throw their hands up in the air after a while.

Totally agree with everything you said.

Every pack needs structure or it all falls apart and we end up with avoidable tragedies like this one.

I thought the story was going to be about an Amish Golden Retriever

Friends of mine have a male Golden who is the most loving dog in the universe. I was strictly a cat person for decades until I met this Golden. He is so NOT aggressive that other dogs can take his food, sometimes right out of his mouth, like snatching a dog biscuit or a carrot. His "dad" calls him "a Quaker."

So you’re making an assumption that the VICTIM had to have caused the attack? I have an 11 pound mini-dachshund, who goes ape if we pick up a box around him.

My brother's new cocker spaniel head-butted me and bloodied my lip by knocking it against my teeth when I leaned down to kiss my brother, who was seated in a chair.

It was very fun

Belles belles and belles galore

My wife was like

“Your mouth is gaping”

Actually it was at an old plantation still in the family since 1848

Cypress trees and moss and planted alfalfa everywhere since it’s often an early crop with cotton later

The Deep South knows how to throw parties and the Delta is likely the epicenter....that or Natchez

Anyhow my wife a Tennessee gal married to a Mississippian navigates it all like she was born to it

You bring up THE most important aspect of today's pit bulls. Where do most get these dogs? Not from AKC breeders but from friends and backyard breeders. They have little info on their pedigree. Assuming a male, fighting, dog begins breeding at one year and can breed multiple litters per year(and those dogs do the same) how many puppies with violent fighting dogs in their bloodline are available? The vast number of BYB selling pups with well-known, fighting, bloodlines make it more than likely that the cute little pup has fighting ancestry.
They don't know if that pups grand, great grand, or great great grand(still alive) is a fighting dog. WHY take the chance with so many other(non frightening) breeds out there?
And if the intimidation factor IS the reason, why be surprised/offended when the public fears/suspects/rejects your intentional choice?

” Adjusted my RegionalSpeak Meter”

lol. I was visiting one of my Miss’sippi cousins and she asked me “have y’all met Peeeety yet?” At least that’s what I thought she said- turned out Peeeety was her brother’s wife Penny.

“An enraged ownerless 100 pound typically very good cardio and focus T-Rex Dobie is much more dangerous to an average person than a Pitbull”

I’ll second that. Having been an amateur expert in being on the receiving end of biting dogs, Dobies scare me about the most. Never did get bitten by one but I went through a roster of their cousins including Chihuahuas, Scotties, GSDs, Setters, white fuzzy dogs and a Chow. I was once charged by two pitbulls which had me wondering if that was how it was all going to end. Fortunately the owner was hot on their trail and he halted them in their tracks before I became a newspaper item.

But enough about dogs, we now have Great White Sharks cruising the SoCal beaches. One nearly killed a woman surfer yesterday, she lost the major portion of one leg and is in a medically induced coma.

Wow, sounds fantastic. The closest I've come to seeing a sight like that is the Brookgreen Gardens plantation just south of Myrtle Beach. It's all tarted up now for the tourists, but when I was a kid (I'm older than you), it really was practically abandoned and incredibly spooky, with the long allée of mature trees hung with swaying Spanish moss leading up to the great house with the white columns, all beset by weeds and fallen leaves. Almost looked haunted.

Having been around innumerable free roaming junkyard GSDs, Rotts, Pits, Dobermanns and everything in between, in 55 years and having *never* been chased, let alone chomped, I gotta wonder why dogs seem to have it in for you.
