FULL TITLE: Henry Winkler and Ron Howard lead tributes to their Happy Days co-star Erin Moran after actress who played feisty teenager Joanie Cunningham dies aged 56 'of a suspected heroin overdose'
Erin Moran, who shot to fame playing teenager Joanie Cunningham in 1970s sitcom Happy Days, has died age 56.
Authorities found Morans body in Indiana following a call about an unresponsive female at around 4pm Saturday.
A source told DailyMail.com that Moran, who lived in a trailer park in New Salisbury, Indiana, died of a suspected heroin overdose.
Her co-stars including Henry Winkler and Ron Howard were quick to pay tribute to her with poignant messages on Twitter.
Winkler, who played Arthur Fonzie Fonzarelli in the show, tweeted, 'OH Erin, now you will finally have the peace you wanted so badly here on earth, Rest In It serenely now, too soon,' just moments after her death was announced.
Howard, who played Richie Cunningham, tweeted in tribute to his on-screen little sister, saying: 'Such sad sad news. RIP Erin. I'll always choose to remember you on our show making scenes better, getting laughs and lighting up tv screens.'

Nobody wants or dreams of that life. I’m sorry for your friend. You’re a good guy. That must bring him comfort. Very sad what they throw away without ever realizing it.
Prolly introduced to hard drugs by "friends". 'Pictures showed her smoking.
Marijuana- and Heroin-use BOTH spiking.
Why didn’t Fonzie and Ron help her when it mattered?
The same entity responsible for the opium plague in China is still alive and active today!
When Kentucky closed their pain clinics they moved across the river to Indiana. When Indiana got tough the heroine moved in. Harrison, Washington , Scott and several other southern Indiana have been hit hard They made national news with Aids passed by needle use.
Before that Meth was a problem in the rural area. Trailers and back of pickups were used as labs. State police post was moved into the area
All three counties have or had sheriff problems. Harrison’s in particular was a corrupt democrat. Republicans took over just a few years ago. But Harrison county is a large area The small town corrupt people have police scanners and keep track of when LEO is near, thus drug use and distribution is fairly well unabated
Not really.
It is tied directly to the over prescribing of opioids for pain. People with legit pain are having to jump through more and more hoops because of the junkies
I remember in the early 90s there was some kind of anniversary TV special for Happy Days and Eric Moran was not on it. The UseNet message boards were filled with “Where was Joanie C.?” messages and lots of speculation of drug addiction problems. Sad to read she was still a victim of a diction to her dying day.
May God Almighty receive Erin into His mercy.
Well, that's the question isn't it? Maybe they didn't. But maybe they tried and she didn't want to be helped badly enough. That's the problem with drug heads - sometimes the addiction is too strong, and the druggie is far tor gone.
I think that druggies should be held involuntarily in mental institutions. The dealers should be killed, but the addicts should be imprisoned in asylums, not prisons.
Love your “handle”. So true.
Bless you.
From Hollywood to....
To Trailer park....
To homeless
Unhappy Days
Very sad. Hollywood - the LAST place in which you want to have your child involved.
Painful to read, let alone watch!
God Bless you and your family for your support.
Stay strong!
Maybe they tried and failed.
First one I saw with a cause of death.
If you hold the drug dealer responsible, you are denying the druggie their humanity. It was their decision to partake and they knew they were taking a dangerous risk, but they did not care.
People are going to self medicate because they want to, the law is not going to change human nature.
As a society we have to decide if the “solution” to this problem is in the “free market” (This is the Free Republic website btw.) or in an increased police state.
An increased police state did not save Erin Moran, or the 23 year old son of my friends hair dresser who died a few days ago, or a coworkers son who died two years ago... Yes I get the pain left behind, I understand the desire to “do something”. I honestly do not see the answer in an increased police state.
>Maybe they tried and failed.<
Allegedly Winkler tried to get her help but she wasn't willing to go into an intensive rehab and he didn't want to just throw money at her to keep partying away with.
If you've ever had to deal with a family member or loved one who is self-destructive, you'd understand.
