Where to Retire.
I'm fixin' to retire in Northeastern Tennessee. Some day.
Summers can be a little brutal temperature-wise, but that's made up for by very mild winters. Rather be warm than cold.
Retired right where I’ve been for the last 45 years, in the hardwood forests of Virginia where the winters are usually short and mild, there’s variety from mountains to the beach, it’s easy to drive anywhere except for two places I don’t go - northern VA and Tidewater, the costs of all things are reasonable and the people are great.
With 15 acres and a house big enough for our 8 kids and our grandchildren, my own shooting range and neighbors I cannot see through the woods, it would be insanity to move......
Thankful to God for His kindness to this old fool........a sinner saved by grace.........
For east coast, if you want mild four seasons, it’s going to be some variation on Southern Appalachia if you’re going to relocate, in my opinion. Western NC, far Upstate of SC, north GA, east TN, southwest VA. Many find TN appealing due to no state income tax, but my experience has been that every state is going to get it’s pound of flesh somehow and will make up for lack of state income tax by nailing you in some other way, so it pays to do your homework.
Southern UT is the worst place in the world: tarantulas, rattlers, high heat, dry, in the middle of nowhere, storms and everything else bad. Stay away...especially LIB
idiots.
The climates of Arizona and our farm here in in Florida are not much different except for the humidity and the frickin' bugs. They're both hot, which we like. We don't do ice or snow at all.
No state income taxes in Florida and cheap, agricultural-exempt property taxes. No traffic, no crime, no worries out here in the country.
We also own my wife's family's private cemetery across the road. That will be our last move. :-)
My Kind of place!
Save Me a Spot.
Live in SW Florida where we have 3 basic seasons of 4 months each; the 70’s (massive invasion by snowbirds leading to higher prices and locals unable to go to restaurants), the 80’s, and the 90’s. Worst parts of the 90’s are night time lows of 78-80, sometimes severe thunderstorms, and frigid cold because every store has the AC on max. Best parts are reduced traffic and restaurant specials.
My sentiments exactly! Florida is a terrible place to retire. There are so many muzzies and BLM here now it is not a good place to consider. Food is sky high, gas is high and the people are rude. Water is scarce due to the ongoing drought. Florida is not the place to retire!

Do internet searches. I check all kinds of things out. From How many grocery stores to what does the public library look like to personal interest Use maps to what’s in surrounding towns.
Use internet maps.
Then narrow your search to several towns. Take a road trip and go check them out.
The longer you can stay in an area the better.
Get a feel for each town.
Try not to compromise to much with what you are looking for.
Otherwise, you will end up miserable.
Everybody like different things. I won’t live in a town that is complicated to get around in or traffic is insane.
It’s true that Georgia has a small income tax, but for retirees, IRA distributions, pensions and Social Security are not taxed. I think at the moment, retirees would have to make over 65K in earned income before taxes would kick in.
My mother, who lives in “no income tax” Tennessee pays over $1000 a year because she has investments in securities. If she didn’t make a penny from her investments, she would still pay just because she owns them.

I enjoyed reading the sentiment and the thread but I have an observation to share.
I observe people from the North complain incessantly about the South. They complain about the weather, the geography, the food, and the people and then retire to the South.
I live in Florida - they're all accurate.

Good choice. Johnson City is nice
Times have sure changed. Taxes are ridiculous in Texas. It’s guaranteed your neighbors will be either illegals, invaders, crack heads, child molesters or a combination. And those Kalifornia imports with their liberal ideas have no respect for others or their property lines.
Exactly the place/area I had targeted.
There is a couple of lakes near it(Watauga is huge). Make sure you look around Roan Mountain. You are far away from everything but you are far away from everything. And the views are amazing.
