All lanes on I-85 are blocked due to heavy black smoke from a massive fire, officials said.

Wow, that black of smoke what is on fire?
It would take a burning gas tanker to do that
Time for Trump to kick off the infrastructure project and get bridges and other things fixed.
“A couple bouts of Atlanta rush hour traffic years ago cured me of ever wanting to live there.”
Methinks it is a (ptui-ptui) democrat run city. That is even more of a reason to not live there.
it appears from the news coverage DOT had a storage yard on the span and was storing rolls of plastic pipe.... so basically lots of solid gasoline..
It looks south of the train track (not a train yard) more like the fire was at Piedmont Road. Looks like the old 85 lanes (don’t remember what they re-named them) are ok, with the damage to the new 85 lanes.
At least it’s inside the loop.

livestream, span drops at 4:06 station time, but is not shown, coverage starts a bit before that.
You’re correct.
I live some 10/15 minutes from that area.
The HERO units park their vehicles there.

This is some serious stuff. Very, very serious.
Watching it on WSB now. Traffic backup a nightmare, worse than I have ever seen
HawtLanta has really gone downhill these many years.
:-)
ATL DOWNTOWN TRAFFIC JAM FOR MONTHS. NO REPORTED INJURY YET.
You probaly should go to the post and hit the abuse button
make you request to remove it.
Looks as if heat from the fire caused bridge support to melt / collapse.
Airport firefighters foamed fire out. More collapse possible
A legit heavy building company could have that span back in operation in 2 weeks.
Part of 85 north bound has collapsed
This happened in the Bay Area when a tanker truck caught on fire. That is not the cause of the fire here but I guarantee this is going to be a mess for some time to come
Best live coverage is out of Phoenix? I’m old enough to remember when CNN used to have news.
I thought is was funny :-)
Might as well laugh about it while we can because until it is repaired laughter will be sparse.
