The U.S. Navy is testing its new electromagnetic rail gun that military officials and researchers have described the as “Star Wars” technology. The weapon can destroy targets up to 125 miles away without stockpiling ammunition and fire projectiles that go 4,500 miles per hour, Newsweek reported.

No need for explosives in the round with that type of kinetic energy.

4500 mph? That’s only Mach 6.
I once worked on missiles that were faster than that.
I think someone got the wrong information.

You could be right but I doubt it. The nice thing about this weapon compared to a missile is that the bullets are pretty cheap. Compared to a missile. Getting hit by a chunk of stuff coming at you at 4500 MPH would really hurt.

NewsWeak idiots
Since rail guns are not actively propelled and have no warhead, by the time you got to 125 miles, there will be very little energy left.

Useful for probably 10 miles max.

Posted yesterday. Ammo too expensive for a second shot.

I imagine if it were a big piece of metal it would pack a wallop.

I am wondering if they could remote control the thing—like have little wings come out with an antenna. That tech probably could not survive the launch.

I’ve been following the development of this weapons platform for years. They’ve been able to improve the accuracy factor and have made great strides in reducing the overall size of the system, which at first was massive. The biggest question I still have is have they improved the ‘charging’ speed. Originally, it took a bit of time to build up the necessary electrical charge. Most modern warships have the capability to generate the necessary amount of charge using their powerplants, the question is can they generate the power ‘fast enough’ should the Navy want to use this system for ship-to-ship engagement.

Not sure they have every played with controlled flight. If they can make this a viable system, they will most likely work on that. Right now the railgun is a purely ‘high impact kinetic energy projectile’ weapon system. The railgun ‘rounds’ are similar to the kinetic energy penetrators used by tanks.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinetic_energy_penetrator

It’s a solid metal finned projectile surrounded by a ‘jacket’ that guides it down the rails. Once expelled, the jacket separates away and the projectile continues onwards.

Has to be a direct hit. A near miss is as bad as a mile.
Skeptical as to its usefulness.

Soooo, how many times can it fire?
How long between shots?
How much per shot?
How much does it weigh, including its capacitors?

We might have been able to do as well better with an old 8” 54 cal gun.

This technology was featured in the Transformers 2 movie “Revenge of the Fallen”. It killed Devastator. :-)

Believe this first gen weapon shoots 10 rounds per minute. The projectile weighs, I think about 25 pounds. I believe a naval 3 inch gun, has a shell that weighs about the same, but that weapon counts on explosives to do most of the damage instead of just kinetic energy.

I believe that was development continues, range and projectile size will both increase. The Army is testing a variant was artillery.

Would love to see if eventually scaled down to a rifle also.

Imagine trying to hit something 125 miles away with a non-guided projectile (solid mass)? Non-line-of-sight, projectile weight deviations, multiple wind velocities and directions, rain pockets, natural barriers, etc... crazy.
