....the city has designated $23 million for urgent repairs, and a plan to build entertainment around the ship would generate the tens of millions of dollars needed to do more repairs.
We know what were going to deal with, and we know our partner, Urban Commons, whos going to be sharing in this investment with the city over the next 66 years that they said: were in, Keisler added.
Urban Commons sent a statement saying: Our team is already in full swing making critical structural renovations and repairs to ensure the Queen Mary is well equipped for the next 80 years, and we will continue to identify and address the most pressing items using the marine survey as a roadmap.
The repairs are expected to cost at least $230 million.
The Queen Mary was built in the 1930s in Clydebank, Scotland. Long Beach purchased the ocean liner almost 50 years ago after it was retired.
The ship is now a floating hotel, tourist attraction and an event venue.

They still hold many events there.
Beautiful ship like so many others but we can’t keep every piece of huge machinery, relic and symbol from the past.
Collecting old ships is not an insignificant financial burden. Take a picture, it will last longer.
A group of HAM operators use to fire up the radio room occasionally. I got to make a contact once.
230 million dollars to repair a rusting 83 year old ship.
What could you built new for $230 million dollars.
I am sure private investors will bear all of risk and of course benefit with all the gains if the project succeeds.
No? Maybe the taxpayers bear all of the risk and others receive the benefits.
The world’s oldest sailing ship, the iron hulled Star of India, is in San Diego. It was built in 1863 and it could still sail around the world today.
My daughter is getting married there next month. Hope it stays afloat till then! :)
it would be one thing if it were named after an american, but ‘ queen mary’?
When I first reported aboard my ship (USN, 1961-64) I was informed that she was welded to the pier and mired in her own coffee grounds. Six weeks later we were underway. Moved a mile up river to another pier.

The London Bridge has been relocated to the Colorado River, too.
Simple fix start pumping concrete into the breakwater then when its cured fill the area in around the hull with it till it reaches the waterline on the ship
A boat is a hole in the water into which you pour money.
A buddy of mine was part of a maritime survey party 20+ years ago on the Queen Mary. He said once they got far into the ship deep below the waterline, they became so worried that they got off asap.
He said they were commissioned to see if the QM could be moved to the shipyard dry dock for a overhaul. I believe their ultimate recommendation was to let her settle in the mud in such a way she didn’t lean too much.
“Art Deco is so yesterday.”
Says you! I’d like to build a brand new house in deco and furnished the same way. Coolest style ever.
They could blow her up for an amazing movie.
But seriously. I used to live across the street. So yeah, I’d miss her. My kids go to the Halloween scary event every year. LBC wouldn’t look the same without her.
Wonderful, congrats!
I’m surprised there hasn’t been ‘round the clock maintenance. To see the peeling paint and rust is troubling.. I’m sure there has been plenty of money for maintaining it and yet just as sure it was spent elsewhere.. They can get the “ resident ghosts” to work a little harder, I guess.
