A 56-year-old woman and her dog, who were missing for almost two days after setting off on a hike in unincorporated Woodside, were found Saturday morning, San Mateo County sheriff's officials said.
Bethnee Haury, who was last seen Thursday on Skyline Boulevard, was located alive and conscious in a deep ravine at 10:30 a.m. Saturday along with her Australian Shepherd named Camaro, sheriff's officials said. The dog not only stayed by Haury's side while she was lost, but also helped lead rescuers to her.
"When we called out for her, we heard her yell back and then a couple seconds later, we heard the dog bark very clearly so Camaro did his job," volunteer searcher Mike McKimmie said.
Haury's four-legged friend received some high praise for his valiant efforts, but Bethnee Haury's husband, Ed, wasn't too surprised.
"He's a big hero," he said. "He stayed with her the whole time. She had him on the leash. He's just very loyal. He senses trouble and stuff like that, so that was good."
Haury was airlifted to a hospital, officials said. She is expected to be OK.
"This is phenomenal," Ed Haury, said. "We weren't sure what was going to happen, but this is incredible."
Despite her condition, Bethnee Haury wasn't in the best of shape when she was spotted.
"She was sitting up, shivering, very dehydrated," McKimmie said. "She wanted water. So the first thing we did was get jackets over her, tried to warm her up."
Bethnee Haury, her husband and son, who are Bay Area residents, were staying at an Airbnb when Bethnee Haury left and went on a hike at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday with Camaro.
The family was on vacation and was not "familiar with the area," Det. Salvador Zuno said. At about 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Haury's husband called the sheriff's office to report that his wife had not returned.
Bethnee Haury suffers from early onset dementia and has Type-2 diabetes and requires insulin injections.
"She has to have food constantly," Ed Haury said. "She has to have a lot of water; insulin once or twice a day."
The San Mateo County Search and Rescue team and the Bay Area Mountain Rescue Unit, professional volunteer search teams, had been searching for Bethnee Haury around-the-clock since she was reported missing, according to Zuno.
More than 70 searchers with trained dogs, teams on horseback, along with off-road vehicles from 16-different Bay Area agencies scoured the trails about seven miles northwest of Woodside. They triple-checked more than a dozen trails within a two-and-a-half mile radius, Zuno said.
An overnight search, which was too dangerous for trained search teams on the ground, continued into early Saturday morning with the help of a specially-equipped sheriffs office aircraft, officials said. An army of volunteers began combing through the mountains above Woodside on foot after sunrise.
A night search was considered too dangerous?Good grief snowflakes, get out there and get it done.
Bring the old man up on charges!
I thought that was weird. I don’t think it’s easy to get lost there.
“He stayed with her the whole time. She had him on the leash.”
It’s not easy to get lost anywhere,if you have a good basic understanding of what you’re doing.Portable GPS has been around for how many years now?
She suffers from early-onset dementia and her husband let her go out by herself on a hike???
The dog was probably wondering “what in the hell is wrong with you, for crying out loud”
What a weird story.
For those who don’t know - Skyline Boulevard runs along the spine of the low mountain range just west of Palo Alto, Mountain View, etc. We’re not talking mountain peaks here - more like 2000+ feet of elevation.
So it’s not exactly some sort of crazy challenging environment . . . BUT who on EARTH would let a 56 year old woman with early onset dementia and Type 2 diabetes set off alone on a hike at 1:30 pm!!! So much fail. It’s great she had the dog with her, but good grief!!
Some place are easier than other. Some trails become indistinct in places. But around there, most trails are too steep on both sides. You can’t go off trail. It’s not like wandering into the Forrest.
This has to be an episode of LAW AND ORDER.
A week earlier there were two women named Bethnee Haury who were treated at the same hospital. The husband asked how his wife was doing and the nurse reported that files were mixed up. She either had Alzheimers or AIDS. The husband figured he would take her out, lose her, and if she found her way back home, he’d shoot her.

Does this mean letting her go for hikes by herself shows that someone was really thinking here?
Women aren’t as spacial aware as men then to top that off she has early onset dementia AND the ability to go easily into ketoacidosis and then a coma.
When some one said its okay to go get lost and die they weren’t joking.
So the husband lets her go hiking in a strange area alone. Maybe he was hoping for the worst and preparing for the worser
Wonder how much life insurance he has on her?

What’s wrong with the husband that he lets this woman go off on her own with these conditions? Seems like you turn a corner in Cali and you’re in the wilderness. Not for me, but I’m very glad she and the puppy are OK.
My daughter and I are way more spatially aware of our surroundings than my husband and son.
Both of them need the GPS to go anywhere. My husband used to get lost very often
I’m always telling him to turn off his GPS when I’m in the car.

The coastal ranges of mountains, stretch from Mexico to Canada.
North of the Bay Area, they grow weed in those ranges.
Woodside is one of the most wealthy places in America.
Ya think?.....LOL!
“She suffers from early-onset dementia and her husband let her go out by herself on a hike???”
Not only that, she has Stage 2 Diabetes, needs food constantly and a lot of water, plus insulin once of twice daily? What was he thinking?
LOL. Rim shot, Doug.
