Kong: Skull Island (age 12+) Verdict: A gigantic disappointment Rating: two stars out of a possible five
More than eight decades have passed since former Daily Mail war correspondent Edgar Wallace created King Kong, but still the giant ape exerts a fierce grip on the collective imagination. What a shame, then, that Kong: Skull Island is so feebly plotted and scripted, monkeying around with the story and, in the biggest misjudgment of all, revealing Kong in all his hairy majesty even before the opening credits.
What a disappointing film this is. There are deliberate echoes of Jurassic Park, but they ring terribly hollow. There's scarcely any tension, no exciting narrative thrust and rather painfully strained attempts at humour, even by the always excellent John C. Reilly whose character I won't divulge, just in case you really don't have anything better to do on Sunday afternoon. But I hope you do. In fact, you could fare a lot worse than staying at home and watching the DVD of The Hobbit director Peter Jackson's 2005 remake of King Kong. It is superior in every way.

Best:
KING KONG the original 1933.
SON OF KONG, 1933.
Peter Jackson version from 2005.
Worst:
The atrocious 1976 version. Jeff Bridges runs around looking like a washed up Jesus Freak Hippie. They made a mistake naming the EVIL Oil Company, PETROX at a time when the Pet rock nonsense was sweeping America.
OK for one viewing:
The Japanese versions King Kong VS Godzilla and others.
Grow, grow
Day say he’s got to grow
Grow grow godzirra!!!
Couldn’t resist.
Mediocre? The 1933 movie was ground-breaking with visuals and special-effects. That scene of Kong towering over NYC skyscrapers is still impressive by today’s standards.
Just saw a pic of the spider in the movie. Nope..
This is not a sequel to the 2005 movie, but actually a prequel to the 2014 Godzilla. They are setting up King Kong v Godzilla as the third in the Legendary Godzilla series.
LOL
In the Dino Delaurentis (sic?) version with Jessica Lange, the Movie Advertising Poster showed Kong on top of the WTC Towers, one foot on each tower being attacked by a Jet Fighters.
People felt misled when Kong wasn’t big enough to straddle both Towers and he was attacked by Helicopters, not Jets.
I thought the trailer had its moments.
“Is that a monkey?”
Taylor Swift must have made him switch sides : )
1976 was pretty good.
2005 movie: events take place on skull island in 1933.
2017 movie: events take place on skull island in 1973.
It's a sequel, even if it doesn't reference any of the events of the previous movie.

In other words, ANOTHER remake.
Are you calling the 1933 version mediocre?!?!?
The plot, yes.
The plot, yes.
Kong was that tall only on a poster.
Asexual but has now transitioned into a female who isn’t sure what to do with her/his neck beard and can’t find a boob installer for his/her massive bust size. Thinking more and more about being a zir.
Oh; the drama!
Confusing the French author ("Les Miserables") with Victor Buono?
Regards,
I thought she began her career in King Kong.

Oops! Une petit aux pas. Well, he was named Victor. At least I got that part right.
You want me to correct your French, too?
:-)
