Film historian Robert Osborne, the effervescent primetime host of Turner Classic Movies since the cabler's inception in 1994, has died. He was 84.
TCM released a statement saying, "All of us at Turner Classic Movies are deeply saddened by the death of Robert Osborne. Robert was a beloved member of the Turner family for more than 23 years."
Osborne was an irrepressible advocate for the films of Hollywood's golden era who wrote the Motion Picture Academy-sanctioned "50 Years of the Oscar: The Official History of the Academy Awards" in 1978 and a number of updates ending in 2008 with "80 Years of the Oscar."

Well, at least he won’t have to put up with Sally Field anymore.
RIP, Bob. You were great.
Sorry to hear this, he was an excellent host. RIP Robert.
He looked so distinguished and knowlegeable.

There have been many famous movie critics, but he was a true movie lover. He will be missed by millions, including me.
Sometimes Mr. Osborne’s commentary was more enjoyable than watching the film itself. God bless you and may you rest in peace.
Never married, no children. RIP
Had a great voice, was very knowledgeable, was decent to his guests and never seemed to have an agenda other than promoting the viewing of the film he was highlighting. There are far too few like Robert Osborne on the tube these days or in the Hollywood he followed.
That’s too bad.
Very well said! Never hear anything political (that I’m aware of) on TMC. It’s what makes it so special.
RIP.
TCM is something I can watch ALL DAY.
That was always the don’t miss part. He always could tell you something you didn’t know.
Bummer! I loved him...so much better than Clooney. Charming, soft-spoken, great breadth of knowledge. Quite a loss...
Me too.
RIP.
Aw, that sweet older gay man? He was great. RIP.
RIP Robert. I knew he had been missing lately on TCM and I wondered about his health. I am saddened by his departure. I’m going to have to take some dammital and go to bed.
RIP
