Bird-watching can be frustrating especially if youre a cat. An internet video showing a feline apparently mumbling to itself while looking for birds through a window has gone viral on Monday. As of Monday afternoon, it had generated over 1.4 million views on YouTube. One can only wonder what the cat is saying.

My cats do the same but I never knew the name for it. Chittering, I like it. Thank you.
Your cat is trying to be diplomatic. Diplomacy is the art of saying “nice birdie” until you pounce and bite.
We live in a highrise. A pigeon used to tease our cat by strutting up to the glass door & parade about while spreading its wings. Kitty’s chittering was that of a very frustrated cat.
Same here. Nothing special. Can always tell there’s a bird outside and in view when one of our cats starts to do that.
Hey! you’re a poet
and didn’t know it!
Our herd of cats do this all the time.

If the sound could be translated into English it would probably amount to seven popular words and the FCC would ban it being broadcast.
Kitty ping...
He used to hunt the neighborhood dogs, too. Was fine by us, kept them out of our yard. Once, our dog got into a scrap with a couple of the neighborhood mutts, and the cat came at a dead run from somewhere out in the back 40 yelling, "WAIT WAIT WAIT FOR ME!!!!". :-)
Jumped right into the middle of the scrum and helped our pup out, until Dad was able to get the garden hose around the house to break things up. Dunno what the cat was thinking, I always figured that he and the dog just tolerated each other so they'd keep getting fed on time. Guess they were more friendly than I ever knew.
He was about 20#, when in his fighting prime. Maybe the original Viking Kitty.
Most of our cats sound like machine guns...ackackackackack...when watching birds. One makes a clicking noise. Very odd!
WAIT FOR ME-——ha.. love it
I believe that cat is saying “Ohh yeah baby, just a little closer” -or- “Ohh you are so lucking I am in here”
I was only a sprout, but I remember it distinctly. :-) Probably because Dad used language that I'd never heard before when he was breaking things up. :-) :-)
I probably was the cause of it, the dog was really protective of me when I was little, and I was playing in the front yard when it all happened.
For a few minutes, it relieved the boredom of growing up in the back woods in the middle of nowhere.
We had a cat that would do that too.
Translation:...”suns a britches...almost had you you little teaser....next time wit da claws out”
LOL!!! Love Larson’s work.
LOL! My grey tuxedo Gunner used to do that watching the birds from the kitchen window. His voice was lower, and he sounded like he was stuttering when he did it.
Cats mumble like this because it prepares their jaw for a strong clench meaning they are preparing to kill the bird.
Alot of big cats including jaguars do this. It is a predatorial instinct that was passed down from generations.
bump
Two of my cats do this, and their respective chatters are distinctive enough that I know which one is on the windowsill without looking.
My tortie doesn’t chatter, but then again she’s actually had some success as a hunter.
