French musicologist and biographer Henry-Louis de La Grange has passed away in Lonay, Switzerland - aged 92
A graduate of the Aix-en-Provence University and Yale University School of Music where he studied under Nadia Boulanger, he will be remembered for his epic four-volume comprehensive biography of composer Gustav Mahler.
He served as long-standing President of the Gustav Mahler Musical Library in Paris, and since first hearing a Mahler symphony in 1945 is said to have devoted the rest of his life to researching every detail of the Austrian composers life.
I studied that guy.
That makes me a Mahler scholar scholar.
Veni Creator Spiritus
He will be missed. Thanks for the post.
When Mahler died so did music.
I know. It’s so sad I cried. And my course work only cost me a buck.
So I’m really a dollar Mahler scholar scholar bawler.
(Love Mahler, can’t avoid the opportunity for humor.)
“Des Knaben Wunderhorn” not my cup of tea.
RIP.
Same here but I once heard him lecture at the Peabody here in Memphis.
Me, I'm a dollar Mahler scholar scholar bawler y'aller.
