If you don’t like rats, adopt a kitty cat. It will not only catch rats, but its scent will deter them.
We have two Australian Shepherds.
If it moves they are on it.
One of them took out a skunk(dead) last year, she did not get much on her, but we try to discourage that sort of activity.
Especially if they're indoor-outdoor kitties who do their business outside.
We kept ours inside for about a month during the really cold weeks. We immediately had rats and mice gnawing their way into the walls and attic.
When the temps went up, we dispensed with the litter box and got them going outside again. The rodent problem ceased instantly.
