No such thing as peak-oil.
There's a group of geologists who have, for years, subscribed to the idea of abiotic oil, that oil is not formed from decayed animal remains, but is created as part of geologic processes within the earth.
Maybe this molten carbon lake is one of the sources for that process.

Most subduction zones are dragging carbonate rock and a bit of water down to the mantle. Carbon and hydrogen can add up to CH4 or methane.
This may be the result of the Pacific plate diving under California. They are going to be hit hard if a carbon tax is ever applied!
