In the past decade or so, science fiction on television has seen a dramatic uptick in both quantity and quality. Shows like Westworld are keeping critics engaged and audiences coming back for more week after week, but while a number of sci-fi shows over the years have developed significant cult followings, others have become notorious examples of just how bad the genre can be when it isnt executed effectively. Heres our look at some of the worst sci-fi shows to ever hit the small-screen. For the record, were focusing specifically on live-action series only. So any infamous animated shows wont be appearing below.

She does still look good. She looked even better when she was 18, but didn’t we all?
I like to think that the confidence I’ve developed over the decades counterbalances that natural decay. I dress better at 50 than I did at 18, too.
Try this. Lots of eye candy.
My son bought be Star Gate Universe on disk. We've started watching it and so far we like it.
That's an understatement.
Sherry Jackson in her "uniform" was hot.
And Theiss was gay.
A real talent as a designer.
But I think the sexiest costume was that Erin Grey disco pants look of the late 70s.
BTW, for all of the hating on Space:1999, they had one of the scariest episodes I've ever seen on TV.
Dragon's Domain.
This one eyed, hypnotizing monster that vacuumed up astronauts and spit out their charred corpses.
Scared the crap out of me when I was 9.
I dress better now than then, too. But it was the 70s and we’re all embarrassed by that.
Now, if I knew then what I know now...
Man trhis list is so far off the grid that some of the below shows far overtake Space 1999:
Quark - never heard of it? Its about a sapce trash collector.
Salvage 1 - never heard of it? Its about a salvage company that is private run. Its the premise I have based my theory we should just send our trash to to the sun for incineration. It would save the planet.
There are others but these two didn’t even get out of the first season before they were cancelled and rightly so. What is on the list actually had a following. When I bring up Salvage 1, no one has even heard of it but it ran for 13 shows or so. I would watch Space 1999 over Quark any day of the week. I rather gouge my eyeballs with a thousand razor blades, again and again (to quote Weird Al) than to watch a single minute of Quark.
That is stupid and people should stop doing it.
I’ve always wondered why Robert Heinlein never wrote for television, considering how many classic sci-fi authors have. At least, nothing I remember seeing.
I don't know, but it must have something to do with bad teeth and obsessing over bodily fluids. lol
Ah, the 70s. Purple corduroy pants with bright-orange pockets and striping down the seams. Mom bought them at a Navy Relief sale. We weren’t poor enough to need Navy Relief, but we were poor enough to shop their sales.
I had no objections. :)
I do. I think I only saw a few episodes. I usually get it confused with that other space show that had Andy Griffith on it called Salvage I.
When I bring up Salvage 1, no one has even heard of it but it ran for 13 shows or so.
I watched every single episode and I like the show. The entire premise of the show hinged on the special rocket fuel they had developed that had much more energy than what NASA was using. They used a converted concrete mixer as their space capsule.
Loved that show! :)
I do remember that episode of ‘99. It was very scary!
I remember both Quark and Salvage 1!
barely! :-)
I thought you said “Land of the Giants” which arguably was THE worst sci-fi show ever.
And not on this list.
I DO remember Salvage I.
Totally forgot about it.
. isn't that the one where the lead character was some kind of junk man who built a rocket in his back yard?
I remember it was kind of a comedy as well.
I just don't enjoy watching him struggle in the role of a starship captain - a personal quirk of mine, I'm sure.
