Senate Votes To Gag Elizabeth Warren After Anti-Sessions Outburst

Not The Onion. Following a scathing speech against Trump's nominee for Attorney General, Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell said Senator Elizabeth Warren had "impugned the motives and conduct of our colleague from Alabama," violating the so-called 'Rule 19'. By a vote of 49-43, Senator Warren was then barred from speaking on the floor until Senator Sessions nomination debate is complete (likely tomorrow evening).

Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.), who was presiding over the the Senate during the Massachusetts Democrat's speech - who at times was repeating words being said to him by GOP Senate floor staff - initially interrupted Warren to warn her that she was on the brink of violating the rule.

As The Hill reports, the drama on the Senate floor comes after McConnell interrupted Warren's speech accusing her of breaking the upper chamber's guidelines.

“The senator has impugned the motives and conduct of our colleague from Alabama,” McConnell said from the Senate floor.

It doesn’t matter that it was Coretta King she was trying to quote. To let her get away with it would mean any senator could say anything about a fellow senator on the floor of the Senate, true or false, as long as it was a quote.

Exactly. She was read the letter with the intent of impugning the Senator, and then claiming it was the letter, not her, who was impugning the Senator.

Then, she got called on it.

Fauxcahontas trotted out a letter from Coretta Scott King objecting to Sessions's confirmation as a federal judge in 1986. King's letter accused then US Attorney Sessions of suppressing the votes of elderly black people by prosecuting three individuals for absentee ballot fraud. Albert F. Turner, Jr., the son of two of the three defendants in the case, has issued a statement in favor of Session's confirmation as Attorney General:

A lot has been said about Senator Jeff Sessions and his record on issues related to race – some of it distorted and unfair. Some of these statements have included references to matters with which I have a very personal connection. My family and I have literally been on the front line of the fight for civil rights my whole life. And while I respect the deeply held positions of other civil rights advocates who oppose Senator Sessions, I believe it is important for me to speak out with regard to Senator Sessions personally.

First, let me be clear: Senator Sessions and I respectfully disagree on some issues. That won’t change when he is the Attorney General of the United States. And I expect that there will be times as it is with all politicians when we will legitimately disagree and I will be required by my conscience to speak out. I look forward to those constructive debates if necessary. However, despite our political differences, the Senator and I share certain Alabama and American values, including a love for our State, its people and our Country.

I have known Senator Sessions for many years, beginning with the voter fraud case in Perry County in which my parents were defendants. My differences in policy and ideology with him do not translate to personal malice. He is not a racist. As I have said before, at no time then or now has Jeff Sessions said anything derogatory about my family. He was a prosecutor at the Federal level with a job to do. He was presented with evidence by a local District Attorney that he relied on, and his office presented the case. That’s what a prosecutor does. I believe him when he says that he was simply doing his job.

I believe that he is someone with whom I, and others in the civil rights community can work if given the opportunity. I believe that he will listen, as he has in the past, to the concerns of my community. More than most I am very familiar with him. I believe he will be fair in his application of the law and the Constitution; as such I support his nomination to be the next Attorney General of the United States.

I encourage the civil rights community to engage in constructive dialogue with Senator Sessions concerning the protection of voting rights for African Americans and other minorities, gun control, senseless killings and strengthening Constitutional protections for all Americans. I stand ready to work with Senator Sessions as he becomes our Country’s Attorney General, and offer to him my willingness to help him in any way I might be of service.

When Lawrence McDonnell went off the deep end on the air, somebody pulled him from the air and made him get therapy before he was allowed in front of a camera again. He's still a radical hater, but he is more polite about it and has not had a recent spittle moment in public.

Liz needs similar treatment. But, apparently she does not have any friends or loved ones who care about her well being and reputation. How sad.

Great letter from Albert F. Turner, Jr., the son of two of the three defendants in the case, setting the record straight on the quality of Sessions' character and his professionalism.

The letter serves as a devastating repudiation of the slanderous smear job that Elizabeth Warren and others are trying to perpetrate against an altogether good and decent man, Senator Jeff Sessions. They obviously won't get away with it. Senator Warren is hysterical, completely unhinged, and utterly lacking in basic human decency.
