Google requires that you provide a valid phone number when setting up a new Gmail account. Boo, hiss. Maybe I need to find a pay phone close to wifi.

As of about five months ago it was still possible to set up a free account with Microsoft's outlook.com/hotmail.com without providing a phone number.
