At the Hole n" the Rock south of Moab, UT, the proprietors sold "desert glass" which was made in much the same manner of which you speak. Rock tumbler and broken (green) Coke and (brown) beer bottles.

There is a lady in my neighborhood who is really into collecting sea glass. She goes quite often to the beach and collects sea glass.

But I have heard of many family outings and how they made home.
A favorite is the one where a rod let go, someone pulls them into town, they put a bob weight (counterbalance) on the crank and drove off into the sunset. Circa 1950’s

Naw, this was out in the middle of Siberia. 100 miles from no where. 1000 miles from where they started from.
It’s a great book and an interesting history. Gets into the WHY of the Siberian Exiles, Gulags, and the “Road of Bones”.
