FULL TITLE: Activist who was walking across America barefoot to raise awareness of climate change is hit and killed by SUV
A man who was hiking across America barefoot on the side of highways to 'save the earth' was struck by a Buick SUV and died Saturday.
Mark Baumer, 33, began his shoeless trek in October. His journey aimed to raise awareness and funds for the FANG Collective, a Rhode Island organization that supports nonviolent resistance to the natural gas industry.
Florida Highway Patrol confirmed Baumer was hit on the side of Highway 90 in Walton County. He was pronounced dead on the scene during the 101st day of his trip.
The vegan, climate advocate was a web content specialist at a library in Providence, Rhode Island. He graduated from Brown University with a MFA in 2011.
He was supposed to end up in California by May and hoped to raise at least $10,000 according to his YouCaring page.
After his death on Saturday, a wave of donations poured in and Baumer's goal was surpassed by $2,000.

I forgot the ;-)
A completely incorrect statement. Google Maps clearly shows sidewalks along side US 90 in downtown Defuniak Springs, which is in the county where the death occurred.
I’m sorry, but all I can think of is the girl who got run over by a tank in Israel... Is it too soon to cue up the House of Pancakes pictures?
This happened about 50 yards from my drive way that comes off of Hwy 90. Saw police cars when coming back from shopping. Didn’t realize it was this fellow.
I can’t help it, this struck a funny bone and I can’t quit laughing
DeFuniak Springs is my home town. I attended Maude Saunders Elementary and graduated from Walton High School. There are sidewalks on Baldwin Ave. and maybe a few more but along Hwy. 90 there can’t be more than a block or two.
I guess technically you would be right but he could hardly spend the whole time walking on those blocks.
Whoh!
“Completely incorrect?”
Well you sure told us then didn’t you.
What part of I 90 are there sidewalks again?
Where exactly did it happen. I get the impression that it was between DeFuniak and Mossy Head but have no idea exactly where.
Are there sidewalks where he was hit?
Par35 wants to know. Its real important to him.
If you can't tell the difference between Interstate 90 and Highway 90, you are obviously too impaired to be behind the wheel of a car.
He was weakened from lack of meat and wobbled into the street. Sadly.
I must be too impaired. I prefer the seats of a car rather than being at its wheels.
Rightfield:
Par35 is real concerned about this. He says there are sidewalks there. Do they have “white lines” on the sidewalks? Inquiring minds want to know!

Either FL 90 or maybe US 90 but I90 is a Northern Route
I’m blissfully still unaware of climate change. I suppose if some barefoot guy walked by my house, I might then become aware or at least have had my awareness raised. But that appears not to be in the cards. At least until such time the weather warms up. It’s a bit chilly out there for barefoot walking.

Thanks, xr. Par35 will be relieved to hear this.
Hmmm. Can you straighten this out par35? Seems like maybe we weren’t “completely incorrect.”
“Yeah. Eccentric but harmless, sounds like to me.
Why criticize him now?”
I wouldn’t wish it on him, but his actions and rhetoric were presumably designed to undermine a legitimate, important industry in the U.S. that benefits us all.
Looks like they start just west of Graham Avenue near the AME church, through town, and all the way out to the east end of the airport. A little over 3 miles worth on the north side of 90, it looks like. Less on the south side.
I must say I do not feel sadness about a lunatics demise.
