It is now almost impossible for Mrs Edgeworth to look at the pictures of Paige as a little girl without feeling tearful.
Paige will soon be 21. But she has changed her name by deed poll to Hayden Cross and has been living legally as a man for the past three years after starting gender reassignment on the NHS, a process which has left Hayden with a deeper voice and facial hair.
It has also bitterly divided his family and left him estranged from those who love him.
Mrs Edgeworth told the Mail poignantly: ‘She’s asked me to call her Hayden, and I say: “I can’t, love.” In my eyes she will always be Paige. She was born a girl. She wasn’t born a boy.’
As desperately sad as this is, it’s not the reason why Hayden’s case is in the news this week, or why a TV documentary team is making a film about him. After all, around 3,000 patients undergo gender reassignment every year.
Hayden Cross’s story is different, quite possibly unique in Britain.
He is believed to be the first transgender man in the country to publicly announce — on the front page of a red-top tabloid, no less — that he is pregnant after injecting himself with sperm from a donor he found on Facebook.
Hayden had originally hoped to freeze his eggs to be able to have children later.
But the NHS declined to pay for it and he could not afford the cost of having it done privately. So the former Asda worker, who lives on benefits in a council bedsit, suspended his hormone treatment and sought an anonymous ‘father’ online.

The world is split politically into those who accept science and those who reject reality. Liberals have designated those who do not believe men get pregnant as “anti-science”.
The really pathetic thing is society promoting it. And punishing those opposed to the mental illness.
so much self deception. Changes name to “be” a man, wants to keep eggs for later children, stops treatments to have baby now, but thinks she is a man?
I pray God wakes her up quickly so she can be a mother to her child and stop pretending to be a man which will cause great harm to her child. (My mom is now a man?) Kids can say they accept it but deep inside they know truth while living a lie to please parent.
It’s desperately sad that a mother thinks of her child as having the gender it was born with???
The Left is twisting strong, beautiful, natural emotions into guilt. A mother sees so much beauty in the natural gender that a child posseses at birth.
Sick. Sick. Sick person who shouldn’t be allowed near a baby, much less produce one. I doubt the fetus will come full term since IT is taking male hormones.
I think I finally understand. If a woman begins to attempt to become a man, it becomes a transgendered man. I get it but I think they have it wrong. A woman turning into a man should be called a transgendered woman.
this story screams that transgender is a mental illness.
That pitiful creature needs to be committed before HE hurts himself any more. And his enablers with him.
