Tommy Allsup, a guitarist best known for losing a coin toss that kept him off a plane that later crashed and killed rock `n' roll stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "Big Bopper" Richardson, has died. He was 85.
-snip
Tommy Allsup was part of Holly's band when the Lubbock, Texas, singer died in the Feb. 3, 1959, plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa.
Allsup flipped a coin to see who between him and Valens would get a seat on the plane and who would have to take the bus to the next stop on the tour.

“Austin Allsup, who last year competed in the singing competition television program “The Voice,” said Valens’ sister reached out to him after his father’s death to offer her condolences.
“I told her in my message back, now my dad and Ritchie can finally finish the tour they started 58 years ago,” he said.”
(thumbs up)

Interesting was another performer involve in the crash, Waylon Jennings. After a show in Clear Lake, Iowa, Holly decided to charter a small plane for his band (consisting of himself, Tommy Allsup (guitar) and Jennings.Ritchie Valens and Tommy Allsup flipped a coin for the last seat, Valens won and took Allsups seat. Since the Big Bopper was sick, he asked Jennings if he could take his seat on the plane. Jennings said that as long as Holly was okay with it, he was too. When Holly found out Jennings was not going to be on the plane, he jokingly told him, I hope your ol bus freezes up! Jennings responded back, I hope your plane crashes! Those words would haunt Jennings for decades.

I’d previously heard a “coin flip” story from Waylon Jennings.
Seems more likely that the top billed singers would get the plane (done travelling sooner) and the backing bands would get to ride in the coach.

Ok, I see that Holly chartered the plane for his band. Makes sense now.
