There was a reason the NFL left LA in the first place. Now, they get to remind themselves of that reason.
The hot shot college coach to pro thing usually doesn’t work out. The Rams’ own John Robinson was mediocre as coach, and Steve Spurrier don’t live up to billing. John McKay did okay with the Bucs, given his #1 bust in Ricky Bell and an overall poor expansion team he had to build.
I think Spanos just wants to park his team in LA until he can scam some unlucky city into a stadium deal.
So what does San Diego even have for a professional sports team anymore? The Padres?
It’s all about the $
Wow, Is that the Mood in L.A.?
What is being said in your guys neighborhoods about this?
At Least the City of Champions Stadium LOOKS nice.
Good move for those of us, who would like to see pro football just fade away after making bad decision everyday like the Former Niners.
Makes no sense. Spanos has to fork over $650 million for the “privilege” of playing second fiddle to the Rams and a tenant in their new stadium. Surely he could have used that money for a downtown stadium next to PetCo a la Seattle or even Detroit.
Just announce they are a sanctuary team.
Time for a new football league?
Well, for starters, they might still not find enough English-speaking people in the area to support the team.
The Rams might as well stink next year so they can draft Darnold.
Saban's tenure with the Dolphins was a disaster.
Chargers have been more successful the last decade than the Rams. They might actually draw more fans. And using the Ravens example kind of shows the writer is wrong. Yeah Modell was hated in Cleveland, but the Baltimore fans loved him. Success on the field salves all wounds, if the Chargers actually go from middling to good they’ll find an audience.
As a San Diego resident for over 25 years (and not necessarily a football fan - prefer baseball), and I noticed something happening after San Diego built a brand new stadium for the San Diego Padres. The Padres fan base is a great deal larger than the football fans.
But, what I wanted to point out is that I have always noticed a snarky-sniping tone from staff and players, as well as fans whenever anybody mentions the Padres stadium.
The Chargers first plan called for building the new football stadium adjacent to the Padres Stadium; and would call for destroying a recent new business - brewing beer. And, the plans to build a new bus storage area - with a larger maintenance area. But, this seemed to be the only place the Chargers wanted to re-locate (from Mission Valley).
The City and County officials tried to steer them to another location; didn’t work. There is already a stadium on Mission Valley where the Chargers would have been playing this season (while their new stadium was built. However, the citizens of San Diego would not vote for an increased hotel tax in order to pay for the stadium.
And .. the whole time I’m watching the back and forth with (especially our Mayor), I kept noticing that the owner of the Chargers NEVER SMILED. I kept getting the impression that he EXPECTED THE CITY/COUNTY OF SAN DIEGO TO BUILD THEM A NEW STADIUM (without any major cost to the Chargers) ..??
And, the more I thought about that, the more I kept saying, well, if the Chargers were winning a lot more games and even winning playoff games on a regular basis; maybe then, the City and County would have been willing to foot more of the bill.
Nobody has to agree with me, I’m just stating my opinion.
Interestingly (another fact I got from Hot Stove this morning), there have been 24 team relocations in the last 40 years. Only one (1) has been in Major League Baseball.
A friend of mine just came out as a LA Chargers fan. He hates football and football people so he decided to do the thing that will most piss them all off.
