Anybody here who knows about this stuff, is it possible for an undetected asteroid or meteor big enough to kill life on earth to be only a week or a month or a year away?

How good are we tracking these things? Is it possible to know for certain?

There used to be an excellent long range tracking system in the US...but older technology...Obama had it shut down.

I recall reading about a large object that flew closer to the earth than the moon. It was large enough to cause a lot of damage. NASA didn't see it until AFTER it had passed by! The sun was in their eyes - literally!

So - the answer is - it could happen today. (Along with a massive earthquake, volcano, tsunami, fire, etc.)
