No, not everything is laid out on the board in chess. Only the current state of the pieces is visible for all to see. Your long-term strategy of what you intend to do with those pieces should, hopefully, be opaque to the opponent. That’s where deception comes in, and it is the basis of pretty much every chess gambit ever invented.
