Lots of crappy things have huge followings. In fact being a hunk of crap seems to be a necessary ingredient to having a huge following. As shown by The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.
But this following is not of the ‘so bad it’s good’ type. Fans of this film genuinely believe it’s good.
