City and fire officials ignored numerous violations because this was a collective of 'artists' and an enclave of progressive values. They (the victims) didn't deserve to die for this, but that is why they did. Had this been a remotely conservative venue, say a Tea Party meeting place, or a church meeting house, it would have been shut down a long long time ago due to the safety violations.
The officials are in full hand wringing and teeth gnashing mode trying to figure out how something this terrible could happen and will no doubt find their scapegoat (deservedly so in this case) in operator Derick Ion, and conveniently forget their selective enforcement of regulations as being a significant contributing factor.
You are correct. No need to defend your post further.
Several articles have stated that the location was cited numerous times for violations, but that no follow up action was taken. And yes, I've taken that at face value and have no concrete evidence YET that the city ignored the follow up... other than the fact that 30+ people are dead.
Do you have any evidence that the city took the appropriate steps to prevent the venue from continued operation, other than issuing citations? At the moment the preponderance of information suggests not, but that could change.
It wasnt suggested that they died due to force.
It was suggested that there are ideologies and lifestyles that inherrently carry potentially fatal consequences.

Certainly their ideologies and lifestyle preferences caused them to make poor choices about their living conditions. They put their feelings and their ‘artistic sensibilities’ above their reason.
I would say the venue, participant worldview and laxity of enforcement had something to do with liberalism but that has nothing to do with the magnitude of tragedy and grief suffered.

If you need law enforcement to tell you that you’re living in a death trap, maybe you shouldn’t plan on living to a ripe old age.
Much of the West has become decidedly unserious and unrealistic in their view of reality in the world.
This is an example of a corrupt and willfully incompetent local government which has criminally endangered and destroyed the lives of dozens of citizens. I’d be willing to bet that this is not the only illegally constructed residence and workplace in Oakland. The owner, manager and lead tenant should all be under arrest and in cuffs in a interview room along with the building inspectors and fire Marshall. The Mayor should also be under investigation. This building was operating under third world conditions in the heart of our high tech hub.
It’s so ironic that the liberals keep pushing regulation after regulation, and the same liberals died from ignoring regulations. Cutters on a much larger scale.
We noticed that and wondered why the women of this country are still bitching. They are bringing in ATF and fully expect to see the lead agent is a woman.
Libs have big mouths when it comes to spouting nonsense politics, but are mum when it comes to doing things illegally or using common sense.
“I’m curious: do you actually have evidence that city officials ignored violations?”
Yes, they were many complaints. They did not apply for permits for the event. They had people living there. The tenants were instructed to tell anyone that they didn’t live there, but were “Artist” and were working through the night.
The “manager” lived on site with his wife and kids. Multiple calls due to the overflow of their garbage (sorry, “ART”)
I spent some time researching this yesterday and the more I found, the more obvious this place existed with a wink and nudge from authorities.
If you really are interested, the details are available, but you will have to search carefully. GhostShip site doesn’t show up with Google search.

This is their website. Scroll down to last image. A nice cozy home type atmosphere for a few laughs with friends. Only thing missing is it doesn’t look like the featured Cheese Pizza.
Of course it.
Perhaps that is true. But there are serious accidents and fires in cities all over the country, even in places where code enforcement is up to snuff.
The fire at the Station night club in Warwick RI back in 2003 killed 100 people. I don't recall the ideology of liberalism being a factor in that fire, or that anyone tried to make it a factor.
The landlord is a minority. Just sayin’...
It is the old, unintended consequences, that democrats never think of, coming back to bite them again and again.
Ultimately, liberalism murders everything.
That wasn’t a Warehouse, it was a fort.
Agreed, that's why I'm referring to this incident (where I think there may have been ideological reasons to not enforce the code), and not to others all over the country.
No. Most likely Oakland’s Fire Marshall and Building Official get complaints every day on hundreds of buildings for suspected code violations. I don’t know their staffing numbers but it would not surprise me if it was inadequate for investigating all complaints in a timely manner. It may also be they believed the building was not occupied full time it was not given the priority it should have been. It could be that higher ups thought coming down hard on the place would be a community relations nightmare, but I doubt it based on neighbors complaints.
What should have happened is simple. The fire inspector should have done an inspection seen the hazards and ordered an immediate shut down specifying what would have to be done before it was allowed to open again. I have no idea if the owner ever had permission to use the building for an artists’ space rather than a warehouse. If they did somebody goofed up. If not it should have been ordered to cease and desist when officials were first presented with evidence of the change.
We have building and life safety and fire prevention codes for a very good reason. Enforcing them is one thing that officials should not apologize for.
