Wife and I visited Pearl five years ago and took the Navy launch out to the Arizona Memorial. We were 2 Americans with about 25 young Japanese.
I asked one young lady (who spoke English) why they were there.
She said it was to see what their grandfathers and fathers had done so many years ago. They had not been told much about it in school.
Credit the kids for wanting to know the truth...

Sad to say, sanitized as Japanese education might be, those young people likely had a better grasp on the basics than do our own average school children.
