During a shouting matching Thursday night between top aides of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, the President-elects campaign manager Kellyanne Conway summed up a key reason for why my Democratic Party lost and will likely continue to lose. Theres a difference for voters between what offends you and what affects you.
To understand what she meant, look to the recent developments in Indiana. Millions of voters in the Rust Belt are in awe as 1,100 of their fellow blue-collar workers at Carrier narrowly missed being laid off. Instead of training Mexican replacements, these Hoosiers are celebrating an American paycheck.
In normal times, my fellow Democrats would have celebrated this modest victory in the fight against globalization. They might have even applauded the president-elect for helping make it happen.
But these are not normal times.
Media reaction captures how tone deaf we have become. My party is advancing stories of outrage over the generous tax incentives that Carrier received some $7.0 million at present.
Were hearing disbelief that companies can now blackmail Trump into getting their own sweetheart tax deals. Even trade critics like Bernie Sanders are complaining that Trump didnt save enough jobs from being shipped overseas.

All tyrants are tone deaf.
Feedback loop. Let’s enjoy it as long as we can.
L
liberals have always been “tone deaf” because of the voices in their heads.
Oh, I'll bet that if you were the CEO you might have a different view of who was blackmailing whom.
The Democrats are acting like every know it all who screws up and can’t accept responsibility for it. Just four years ago a lot of those Rust Belt voters who went for Trump were still voting for Obama. Let the Dems flounder in their stupidity. Let them keep blaming the electorate. We should stand back and let them implode. If they pick a true radical like Keith Ellison to head their party they’re ensuring more losses in the future.
The message of Indiana and Carrier is that 'taxation' is a job killer... and I do pray Trump keeps pounding that drum... I consider those special 'regulations' put in place for the profits of a few, taxation. The gated communities of Wall Street protectionism need to figure out we the people are on to their gaming US.
Obama ran against the 1%, Hillry could not with a straight face. I thought it was curious that Occupy and those anti- 1% miraculously melted against Trump.
The 1% elites supported the Butcheress 100%.
bioq........with their heads up their rectums :-)
oohrah!!!
Yes, they did. Some of them paid her handsomely to tell them in private what she could not say in public. I found it striking the left did not necklace Trump with the 1% devil, like they did with 'choke like a dog' Romney.
That said, let’s hope this tactic is at most a temporary stop gap.
The taxation rules should be broad and uniform. Special breaks for the favored are detrimental to allowing efficient operation and overall growth. Government should not be in the business of picking favorites and I,pending their competitors.
Taxation in general should be lowered. This doesn’t work well with set-asides and special breaks.
Rats once again blaming everything but the truth. Rats are not “tone deaf,” they are BRAIN DEAD.
I hope he’s wearing his protective Flak Jacket. The Dems do not take kindly to strident opposition. Better yet, come on over to our side. Climb aboard the Trump Train, where the seats are comfortable and the scenery is fantastic.
Dems don’t get economics. Obama left us with a crappy ACA, fannie mae and 108 billion in student loan debt to deal with (and that is on top of a ton of other bad policies from before) and all they can do is whine like a bunch of babies. It’s time to fix the mess.
How do you make taxation uniform in the business world? What all these that appear to be all for taxation and think Carrier got special treatment, miss what is the real tax tool. Regulations. And these regulations are done specifically to favor politicians big packed donors. So if you really are for ‘broad and uniform’ taxation then look at the whole picture and NOT a measly 7 million dollars, Carrier secured on behalf of a 1,000 employees. What would the ‘tax’ burden be on the people of Indiana if any portion of these 1,000 (and families) cannot find a new job?
Besides Carrier committed to revamping the plant starting at a 16 million dollar investment... What would the tax loss be to Indiana IF a 1,000 employees file for unemployment benefits?
Yes, I know. Regulations are taxation by another name, sometimes they are called mandates. I am trying to keep it simple.
Regulations absolutely are a part of the equation - both narrow attacks, and exemptions. This beyond the basic substrate of an overwhelming bureaucracy.
Americans are taxed to the max, mandated to the ground and regulated to death. No conversation regarding 'taxation' should be limited to tax rates. A dairy farmer is NOT taxed and regulated or mandated the same as an air conditioner manufacturer. Have you heard California is regulating cow farts? Seriously?
Crewman: Iceberg ahead, Captain!
Captain: Damn the iceberg; full speed ahead!
