One of the five survivors of the plane crash in Colombia that killed 71 most of them belonging to a Brazilian soccer team said he dodged death because he followed safety instructions.
Crew member Erwin Tumiri said that as many passengers panicked, he followed the guidelines repeated at the beginning of every flight.
I survived because I followed safety protocols. Before the crash, many got out of their seats and started to scream, Tumiri said, according to Latin American news outlet NTN.

The pilots on the British Aerospace 146 aircraft declared an emergency due to a possible electrical failure, Rionegro airport spokeswoman Ana Lucia Perez Mesa said.

Certainly there will be fatalities with the scene looking like that, but there may be fewer fatalities if people followed protocol. While the crewman’s advice may be the opposite of comfort for the families of the deceased, if the advice causes some people in the future to keep their heads, it may save some lives.
“That certainly qualifies as a hard landing, for sure...”
Yeah. I don’t think “crash position” would have worked for most of those people. Might have saved a few more, though.
I read somewhere that the pilot intentionally dumped fuel to avoid an explosion on impact, probably also to reduce the plane’s weight.
I’ll be interested to see what the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder reveal.
Yeah, these were pro athletes in tip top shape. If they didn’t survive impact nobody could.
I'm guessing is was in the context of a larger question by a reporter, not the emphasis given to the comment. Remember, this guy is not used to giving quotes.
As for safety protocol saving his life, had he been in parts of the plane totally destroyed, he would not have survived. It was luck of where he was positioned in the aircraft...and being strapped in.
I had a similar experience while parachuting. I got caught in a thermal updraft and literally ‘hung’ in the air for what seemed an eternity. I was the first one out of the plane but the the third or fourth one to land on the ground. One of my fellow jumpers who landed before me was scratching his head in dismay as he knew I’d jumped first. LOL
So, “scream like a little girl” becomes, “scream like a soccer player.”
;-)
I believe I read somewhere (can’t find the source) that once the pilot determined there was no hope of avoiding a crash, he dumped the fuel - thus avoiding a fireball on impact.
The reality is survivability in this tragic airliner crash mostly came via LUCK.
How about wrapping 2 tons of steel, plastic and assorted other materials around you and hurtling down a stretch of asphalt at 70 mph, especially on icy roads? That is what millions do, each day. That is not idiotic?
Remember, life is fatal! The moment we are born, we start the process of dying. Short of Jesus’ return during your lifetime, your death is inevitable. In most cases, a plane crash is fatal and usually mercifully quick. With car crashes, there are thousands every year, who are maimed for life and suffer for years before dying. Personally, I would prefer a quick death to an agonizingly slow, painful death due to chronic pain from vehicular injuries.
FWIW, statistically, you are more likely to die in a vehicular accident than an airplane crash. Based on that alone, how is flying any more idiotic than driving?
Just horrible to know you are going to most likely die and see it play out.
About 25 years ago a friend of mine died in a plane crash. People who listened to the voice data recorder were pretty shook up as both pilots know for a while that they were going to die.
Juliane Koepcke, LANSA Flight 508. This story is beyond unreal. Aircraft disintegrated in-flight. Talk about LUCKY:
Did anyone get eaten?
The picture I posted does not look like the right plane. I have checked, and it’s not the same plane. My bad. The photo of the plane discussed in the article (shown at post #9) shows no fire damage either.
I prefer flying over driving any day, especially here in South Florida where half the drivers are legally blind.
