The early 1970s were a tough time in the lives of The Beatles. The band had dissolved among growing tensions between the musicians, and in 1970 they decided to go their separate ways and officially disbanded the most important group in modern music. By 1971, Paul McCartney found himself in one of the worst spots in his life, one that "he would look back on ... and tell everyone that he'd almost had a nervous breakdown."
It was during this time that relations between The Beatles were at the most volatile, and in 1971, John Lennon sent a scathing letter to his former bandmate and then-wife Linda McCartney. "I was reading your letter and wondering what middle aged cranky Beatle fan wrote it," Lennon's typed and hand-annotated message to McCartney reads.
"Do you really think most of today's art came about because of the Beatles?" Lennon wrote. "I don't believe you're that insanePauldo you believe that? When you stop believing it you might wake up! Didn't we always say we were part of the movementnot all of it?Of course, we changed the worldbut try and follow it throughGET OFF YOUR GOLD DISC AND FLY!"

I recently read that all of the Beatles were assholes to people.
One thing Lennon got right, they were part of a movement but it wasn’t all them. As for best I’d give that to the Stones, they are still together, still performing and can still sing.
My spouse wanted to see McCartney when he was in town this past summer and I went for the ride since I already knew that his voice was shot, having seen his last performance at a Super Bowl and at the London games.
The sound was off and as I said, he doesn’t have the voice for it anymore.
You go to see the legend I guess, but he just couldn’t hit a lot of the notes anymore and I think they tried to cover it up with the sound being too loud.
I then looked up those that performed at Indio and it confirmed it, they still sounded good except for Paul.
.
The drugs had destroyed Lennon’s gray pile.
.
I would agree that McCartney seemed nice enough, then again when you are getting paid to be nice....
“I think I’ll put on “Sometime in New York City”, it’s a masterpiece ! “ ... said no one ever.
.
You appear to prefer the depressing songs.
.
Lennon is unlistenable crap.
.
Lennon, like most extreme lefties had nothing but contempt for Life itself.
He worshiped death.
.
McCartney did sill love songs.
Lennon wrote enduring classics.
.
>> “Drug abuse explains the letter.” <<
Totally!
.
If you thought Beethoven was a commie you would say the same of him.
I suspect you cannot see past your emotional reaction to his f’d up politics and godlessness.
I never liked the Beatles. the music was way to childish.
Revolution? Childish?
Norwegian Wood?
Tomorrow never knows?
Sheesh. I never thought of those as childish. Perhaps you’re thinking of McCartney songs.
When my sisters were screaming at the TV then night Sullivan had the lads on... IT was so weird. I liked the yard birds and the kinks, and the Dave Clark 5.
Footage from Beatle concerts show women in a state of of hysteria while their dates were looking around thinking - WTF is wrong with these girls?
I think I like Revolver on Parlophone virgin vinyl the best.
.
Yoko was the cannon ball to the ship’s mast.
.
Well put.
Ever song was childish!
Everything they wrote was childish.
Everything they did played to a national childish behavior that truly served no purpose other than make them money.
Norwegian Wood / Summer ‘68 nothing childish about the poetry.
You assume incorrectly. As a musician and sound engineer who happens to know a few industry people , it’s very common knowledge Lennons songs during his solo periods are substandard crap masked by heavy echoes and reverbs. Instant Karma is prime example of really bad amateurish playing covered up with heavy reverb to cover the aweful drumming and hideous guitar playing. His solo albums are atrocious and only known because of his connection to the Beatles. McCartney outclassed Lennon in every regard as a musician. George Martin did miracles covering up his amateur playing. The anthology shows jos original ideas being nothing special and others carried him.
I agree with you for the most part but the album that came out at the time of Lennon’s death wasn’t bad. Watching the Wheels and Starting Over were pretty good songs.
McCartney did sill love songs.
Lennon wrote enduring classics.

Paul was the better songwriter, but John wrote the better songs. (Even “Imagine” if you change the words, heh)
